provisions of the Localism Act.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/ivy-house-nunhead-07.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the Ivy House pub in Nunhead, London's first co-operatively owned pub, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rebuilt by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trumansbeer.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Truman&#8217;s brewery<\/a> in the 1930s as\u00a0an example of an\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.spectator.co.uk\/article\/11th-may-1929\/18\/the-improved-public-house\" target=\"_blank\">Improved Public House<\/a>,&#8221; the pub was formerly known as the\u00a0Newlands Tavern and dates back to Victorian times.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/ivy-house-nunhead-03.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the Ivy House pub in Nunhead, London's first co-operatively owned pub, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to its &#8220;unusually high level of surviving original features and fittings [forming] a largely complete 1930s interior,&#8221;\u00a0the pub now enjoys Grade-II listed protection.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/ivy-house-nunhead-02.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the Ivy House pub in Nunhead, London's first co-operatively owned pub, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0music and dance was popular at the pub during the 1950s and 1960s, it was only after Reg and Sue Fentiman took over the premises in 1972 that it became more widely known as a live venue.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to their enthusiasm, the young music-loving couple soon made the Newlands\u00a0a notable fixture\u00a0on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pub_rock_(United_Kingdom)\" target=\"_blank\">pub rock circuit<\/a>,\u00a0hosting legendary\u00a0acts such as\u00a0Joe Strummer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grahamparker.net\/Newlands_Liners.html\" target=\"_blank\">Graham Parker<\/a>, Ian Dury, Dr Feelgood, and Jeff Beck.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/ivy-house-nunhead-04.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the Ivy House pub in Nunhead, London's first co-operatively owned pub, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In April 2012, the pub was closed down and subsequently sold to a property developer who had drawn up plans to gut the interior and turn the entire building over to residential accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>Happily, the community fought back and\u00a0a dedicated group of \u00a0volunteers prevented the destruction of the historic pub interior, and raised a million pounds to buy the freehold. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ivyhousenunhead.com\/savingtheIH.php\" target=\"_blank\">Read their inspirational story here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/ivy-house-nunhead-05.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the Ivy House pub in Nunhead, London's first co-operatively owned pub, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reopening in August 2013, the pub now serves a fantastic selection of\u00a0real ale and craft beers, and is once again being used as a venue for music and other live events.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/ivy-house-nunhead-06.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the Ivy House pub in Nunhead, London's first co-operatively owned pub, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/ivy-house-nunhead-08.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the Ivy House pub in Nunhead, London's first co-operatively owned pub, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>View from the stage.
