{"id":16350,"date":"2015-06-29T10:00:23","date_gmt":"2015-06-29T09:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=16350"},"modified":"2015-06-28T23:57:34","modified_gmt":"2015-06-28T22:57:34","slug":"70s-new-wave-art-rockers-deaf-school-turn-up-the-volume-in-brighton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/70s-new-wave-art-rockers-deaf-school-turn-up-the-volume-in-brighton\/","title":{"rendered":"70s new wave art-rockers Deaf School turn up the volume in Brighton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/deaf-school-brighton-01.jpg\" alt=\"Deaf School at the Prince Albert, Brighton, June 2015\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They may be a totally\u00a0obscure band to most\u00a0people, but Deaf School were one of those great bands that found themselves with the right music at the wrong time.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/deaf-school-brighton-02.jpg\" alt=\"Deaf School at the Prince Albert, Brighton, June 2015\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[<em>Above: downstairs bar in the Prince Albert<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Formed in Liverpool in 1973, the band recorded three albums between 1976 and 1978, with their story-driven songs mixing up art rock,\u00a0music hall,\u00a0Brecht\/Weill cabaret to rock\u2019n\u2019roll satire.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/deaf-school-brighton-03.jpg\" alt=\"Deaf School at the Prince Albert, Brighton, June 2015\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although they split in\u00a01978 &#8211; their popstar hopes washed away by the punk tsunami &#8211; they went on to have a lasting influence on\u00a0bands as diverse as\u00a0Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Dexys Midnight Runners and Madness.<\/p>\n<p>Suggs from Madness said that seeing the band live was like being &#8220;transported into some faded theatre at the turn of the century,&#8221;while Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McClaren \u00a0observed, &#8220;They were a great band. But it&#8217;s just as bad being too early as too late.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"735\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OJWPqyWcux8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>[<em>Deaf School in Granada studios in 1977<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Journalist, author and founder of Mojo magazine, Paul Du Noyer, sang their praises very highly indeed, &#8220;In the whole history of Liverpool music two bands matter most, one is The Beatles and the other is Deaf School.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/deaf-school-brighton-04.jpg\" alt=\"Deaf School at the Prince Albert, Brighton, June 2015\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most of the band&#8217;s members\u00a0went on to enjoy successful careers afterwards, with guitarist Clive Langer producing Madness and Dexys Midnight Runners and\u00a0co-writing the astonishingly beautiful\u00a0&#8216;Shipbuilding&#8217; single with\u00a0Elvis Costello.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/deaf-school-brighton-05.jpg\" alt=\"Deaf School at the Prince Albert, Brighton, June 2015\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0inestimable Rev Max Ripple.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/deaf-school-brighton-06.jpg\" alt=\"Deaf School at the Prince Albert, Brighton, June 2015\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I saw the band on one of their first tours in Cardiff, so seeing them back on stage again was something of an unexpected treat &#8211;
