Duke of Cumberland statue recreated in soap, Cavendish Square, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Written in Soap: A Plinth Project is an ongoing, large-scale public art sculpture project by the Korean artist, Meekyoung Shin, in London, Seoul, and Taipei.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/statue-of-soap-london-03.jpg\" alt=\"Written In Soap: A Plinth Project - Duke of Cumberland statue recreated in soap, Cavendish Square, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The original stone equestrian\u00a0statue of the Duke of Cumberland\u00a0was erected on the\u00a0plinth in 1770\u00a0before\u00a0a closer examination of his activities saw him stripped of his hero status and condemned as \u00a0&#8220;Butcher Cumberland&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The statue was subsequently torn down in 1868.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/statue-of-soap-london-04.jpg\" alt=\"Written In Soap: A Plinth Project - Duke of Cumberland statue recreated in soap, Cavendish Square, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Shin was commissioned to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writteninsoap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">create a new work<\/a> for the plinth, which saw the Duke returning to the plinth, but this time created from\u00a0soap.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/statue-of-soap-london-06.jpg\" alt=\"Written In Soap: A Plinth Project - Duke of Cumberland statue recreated in soap, Cavendish Square, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the\u00a0seasons passing, the sculpture has cracked, faded\u00a0and eroded\u00a0as the soap disintegrates and releases a perfumed aroma.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/statue-of-soap-london-07.jpg\" alt=\"Written In Soap: A Plinth Project -
