The Brighton i360 tower<\/a>, the controversial ‘replacement’ for the seaside town’s\u00a0much-loved but now-abandoned West Pier<\/a> can be seen under construction in these recent photos.<\/p>\n

Billed as a\u00a0‘vertical pier’ containing\u00a0a single viewing pod that can hold up to 200 people, the developers say that their vision\u00a0follows “in the spirit of the original pier, inviting visitors to \u2018walk on air\u2019 and gain a new perspective of the city, just as they \u2018walked on water\u2019 in the past and viewed the city from the sea.”<\/p>\n

At 175 metres high, and with an observation pod rising to 141 metres (450 feet), the i360 will be Britain\u2019s highest observation tower outside London, sporting a shop and hospitality suite and a cafe\/restaurant catering for up to 400 people built at the base.<\/p>\n

There will also be a ‘Sky Bar<\/a>‘ in the pod in the evenings (illustrated above).<\/p>\n

Commendably, the venture has pledged to\u00a0be\u00a0first tourism employer in Brighton and Hove to\u00a0commit to the Living Wage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Completing the\u00a0tower involves a complex procedure in which 17 ‘steel cans’ have to be jacked into place.<\/p>\n

After being awarded a\u00a0\u00a314.2m Lottery award in 1998, residents and tourists were looking forward to the\u00a0Grade I listed pier being returned to its former glory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sadly\u00a0two arson attacks and major storm damage ensured that it\u00a0will never return.<\/p>\n
