{"id":16641,"date":"2015-10-15T13:41:38","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T12:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=16641"},"modified":"2022-04-07T12:09:58","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T11:09:58","slug":"a-sunny-autumnal-afternoon-at-roath-park-cardiff-in-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-sunny-autumnal-afternoon-at-roath-park-cardiff-in-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff &#8211; in photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-01.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I love Cardiff&#8217;s Roath Park.<\/p>\n<p>Built on\u00a0a &#8216;malarial bog&#8217;, the park opened in 1894 and is dominated by\u00a0a 30-acre lake formed by\u00a0the damming of the Nant Fawr stream.<\/p>\n<p>A comfortable 1.3 miles stroll takes you around the lake, and at the end there&#8217;s a cafe overlooking the water ready to reward you with coffee, cake, snacks and meals.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-02.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most of the park land was donated to the city in 1887 by the uber-rich Marquis Of Bute, and in 1915 a mini-lighthouse was constructed in the lake containing a scale model of the &#8216;Terra Nova&#8217; ship to commemorate Captain Scott&#8217;s ill-fated voyage to the Antarctic from Cardiff in 1910.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-03.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The park still retains a strong Victorian atmosphere and is a lovely place to spend a few hours pondering life&#8217;s complexities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-04.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lake has a population of about 100 swans and a number of geese. The swans, in particular, take no nonsense from anyone, so if you see one standing in your path, you&#8217;d best walk around it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-05.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-06.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-07.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-08.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-09.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lake acts as an important habitat for over-wintering and breeding birds, including mallard, cormorants and herons.<\/p>\n<p>The four islands within the lake\u00a0-which are inaccessible to the public\u00a0&#8211; provide\u00a0safe nesting sites.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-10.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-11.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Boat in need of a bit of work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-12.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-13.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I was a small child, going for a pedalo trip around the lake was always a special treat.<\/p>\n<p>Still is, to be fair.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-14.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-15.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/roath-park-cardiff-autumn-18.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny Autumnal afternoon at Roath Park, Cardiff\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scott&#8217;s doomed expedition to the\u00a0Antarctic set out from Roath Dock aboard the ship Terra Nova on June 15th 1910, with his\u00a0unusual choice of departure point due to the exceptional contribution of the City to the expedition\u2019s preparations and financing.<\/p>\n<p>His\u00a0expedition is commemorated with this unusual monument.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roathcardiff.net\/2012\/07\/31\/roath-park-and-captain-scott-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roath Cardiff<\/a> adds more detail:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The proposed clock tower became the Scott Memorial, the lighthouse at the south end of Roath Park Lake. The Lake was emptied in 1914 in order to build foundations for the tower, which was completed during 1915.\u00a0 John Smith Clockmakers of Derby produced a clock for the tower.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On October 14th 1918 it was officially presented to the City, again by Mr. F.C. Bowring.<\/p>\n<p>A plaque was placed on the side of the Memorial facing the Promenade:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To the memory of<br \/>\nCaptain R. F. Scott C.V.O. D.S.O. , R.N.<br \/>\nand his faithful companions<br \/>\nCaptain L. E. G. Oates, Lieut. H. R. Bowers R.I.M.,<br \/>\nDr. E. A. Wilson and Petty Officer Edgar Evans R.N.<br \/>\nwho sailed in the S.S. Terra Nova from the Port of Cardiff<br \/>\nJune 15th 1910, to locate the South Pole; and, in pursuit of<br \/>\nthat great and successful scientific task, laid down their<br \/>\nlives in the Antarctic Regions. March 1912.<br \/>\n\u201cBritons all, and very gallant gentlemen\u201d.<br \/>\nErected and presented to the City of Cardiff by<br \/>\nF. C.
