in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last week, I took a trip south to return to the charming East Sussex town of Lewes.<\/p>\n<p>I was there to watch my team, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brixtonbuzz.com\/2016\/02\/lamentable-in-lewes-woebegone-hamlet-crushed-by-bottom-of-the-table-strugglers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dulwich Hamlet lose<\/a> (once again) to the local football club, but that didn&#8217;t prevent me enjoying my time in the town.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-lewes-sussex-02.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes: architecture, a disused railway line and a fine chippie - in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My first stop &#8211; and my favourite pub in Lewes &#8211; is the Lansdown Arms on Lansdown Place, which was sporting a Ziggy Stardust tribute.<\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/we-feel-the-love-for-saturday-night-at-the-lansdown-arms-lewes\/\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed the pub<\/a> during my last visit, and this time I learnt that locals refer to it as &#8216;Platform 6&#8217;, on account of its proximity to Lewes station (which has five platforms).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-lewes-sussex-03.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes: architecture, a disused railway line and a fine chippie - in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Willey&#8217;s Bridge, opened in Feb 1965 by the &#8216;Mayor Councillor A C Barber&#8217;, crosses the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Ouse,_Sussex\" target=\"_blank\">River Ouse<\/a>\u00a0on the outskirts of town.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-lewes-sussex-26.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes: architecture, a disused railway line and a fine chippie - in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You can see Lewes lying like a box of toys under a great amphitheatre of chalk hills &#8230; on the whole it is set down better than any town I have seen in England.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a title=\"William Morris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Morris\">William Morris<\/a> (1834-1896)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-lewes-sussex-27.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes: architecture, a disused railway line and a fine chippie - in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lewes was once connected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wealden_Line\" target=\"_blank\">Wealdon Line<\/a>, a double track railway\u00a0that ran to\u00a0Tunbridge Wells, some 25 miles away.<\/p>\n<p>The southern part of the line, running from\u00a0Lewes to Uckfield, closed on 4 May 1969.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-lewes-sussex-28.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes: architecture, a disused railway line and a fine chippie - in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The northern section of the line has partly re-opened under the auspices of the <a title=\"Spa Valley Railway\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spa_Valley_Railway\">Spa Valley Railway<\/a>, whilst the <a title=\"Lavender Line\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lavender_Line\">Lavender Line<\/a> has revived\u00a0<a title=\"Isfield railway station\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isfield_railway_station\">Isfield Station<\/a> on the southern section with about one mile of track.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-CentralRail_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-lewes-sussex-29.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes: architecture, a disused railway line and a fine chippie - in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With growing congestion on the railways,\u00a0\u00a0there has been a concerted campaign since 1986 led by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wealdenline.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wealden Line Campaign<\/a>\u00a0to re-open the entire line to passengers, with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wealdenline.org.uk\/rebuilding-uckfield-to-brighton-lewes.html\" target=\"_blank\">detailed plans and proposals being drawn up<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CentralRail_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-lewes-sussex-30.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes: architecture, a disused railway line and a fine chippie - in photos, February 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Lewes Arms found itself embroiled in a high profile dispute\u00a0in 2006, when its owners, the Greene King Brewery, banned the sale of the locally produced &#8211; and delicious &#8211; <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Harveys (brewery)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harveys_(brewery)\" target=\"_blank\">Harveys Sussex Best Bitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewes_Arms_controversy\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Harveys brewery is approximately half a mile from the pub and is a major local employer. The 220-year-old pub in the centre of the town had been acquired by Greene King in 1998. The seasonal Harveys ales were withdrawn in 2004 but the Best Bitter remained on sale because of its popularity &#8211; outselling Greene King&#8217;s cask ales by a factor of 4 to 1.
