According to the 2011 Census, the town had a population of 49,463.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-08.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite arriving during the end of the evening rush hour, the town centre was pretty much deserted\u00a0and\u00a0the glum faces that accompanied me on the jam-packed train from Liverpool Street reminded me why I should count myself lucky not to have spend two hours every day commuting.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-09.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The High Street was lined with closed shops. Even the town&#8217;s McDonalds had packed up and moved away, closing down in March this year after trading in the town <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brentwoodgazette.co.uk\/McDonald-s-Brentwood-high-street-close\/story-28905503-detail\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">since 1991<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-03.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Shop window.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-04.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use Ur Loft. This relatively small building was raised to Cathedral status in 1917. Between 1989 and 1991 the church was enlarged in an Italianate Classical style by <a title=\"Quinlan Terry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quinlan_Terry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quinlan Terry<\/a>. The original church building on the south (liturgical east) side was retained<\/p>\n<p>The new Brentwood Cathedral was dedicated by Cardinal Basil Hume on 31 May 1991. [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brentwood_School,_Essex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-27.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just look at the ugliness of this ungainly modern building. Slapped right next to Brentwood School, its cheap and nasty fa\u00e7ade stands out\u00a0like\u00a0a sore thumb.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-29.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-30.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another closed shop.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-31.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unmistakably one wanky name for a business.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-brentwood-essex-32.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of Brentwood Essex: closed shops, hand written bus notices and a fine pub, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Poor old William Hunter met a grisly end.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>William Hunter<\/b> was a Marian martyr burnt to death in Brentwood at the age of 19 on March 27, 1555 on Ingrave Road. He had lost his job in London as a silk-weaver because he refused to attend the Catholic mass, despite an order that everyone in the City of London had to attend,\u00a0and had come to live with his parents in Brentwood, but got into a dispute when discovered reading the Bible for himself in Brentwood Chapel. He refused to accept the Catholic dogma of transubstantiation according to which the bread and wine of the\u00a0communion become the body and blood of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>He was taken before Antony Browne, then the local Justice, but later Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, but refused to retract his position. Hunter was then sent to Bishop Bonner in London. He resisted both threats and bribes\u2014Bonner offered to make him a Freeman\u00a0of the City of London and give him \u00a340\u2014and was eventually returned to Brentwood to be burnt.
