{"id":17012,"date":"2016-04-22T12:19:05","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T11:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=17012"},"modified":"2016-04-22T12:19:32","modified_gmt":"2016-04-22T11:19:32","slug":"palmyras-arch-of-triumph-recreated-in-londons-trafalgar-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/palmyras-arch-of-triumph-recreated-in-londons-trafalgar-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Palmyra&#8217;s Arch of Triumph recreated in London&#8217;s Trafalgar Square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/palmyra-arch-trafalgar-square-01.jpg\" alt=\"Palmyra's Arch of Triumph recreated in Trafalgar Square, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/digitalarchaeology.org.uk\/media\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">3D facsimile arch <\/a>from Palmyra\u2019s destroyed Temple of Bel was unveiled in London\u2019s Trafalgar Square earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0monumental recreation of the destroyed Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, Syria, is\u00a0a\u00a0scale model of a 1,800-year-old arch destroyed by Islamic State militants in October 2015.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/palmyra-arch-trafalgar-square-02.jpg\" alt=\"Palmyra's Arch of Triumph recreated in Trafalgar Square, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 6-metre (20ft) model was made in Italy from Egyptian marble, and\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/mar\/29\/palmyra-message-isis-islamic-state-jihadis-orgy-destruction-heritage-restored\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">represents an act of defiance<\/a>, showing that\u00a0restoration of the ancient site is possible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/palmyra-arch-trafalgar-square-03.jpg\" alt=\"Palmyra's Arch of Triumph recreated in Trafalgar Square, April 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The temporary work was unveiled by London&#8217;s mayor\u00a0Boris Johnson, who said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For 2,000 years Palmyra stood in a desert, for 2,000 years warriors, generals, conquerors have come and gone.
