Although it&#8217;s no longer used by the railway, it&#8217;s a wonderful survivor of the Victorian steam age, constructed\u00a0in the\u00a0grand Jacobean style with decorative brickwork.<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1846 to the designs of architect\u00a0Frederick Barnes, the station has been described as\u00a0&#8220;one of the best in East Anglia&#8221; and survived closure in 1967 after reopening in 1971. [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Needham_Market_railway_station\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-03.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The building was restored in 2000, and won an award in the 2002 National Railway Heritage Awards.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-04.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Needham Market Wongs caters to a wide range of tastes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-05.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Needham grew up\u00a0around the wool combing industry until the onset of the plague, which swept the town from 1663 to 1665.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Needham_Market\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a> recalls the town&#8217;s macabre past:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To prevent the spread of the disease, the town was chained at either end, which succeeded in its task but at the cost of two-thirds of the populace.<\/p>\n<p>The town did not recover for nearly two hundred years, with the canalisation of the River Gipping in the late 18th Century and the introduction of the railway.<\/p>\n<p>Modern Needham Market contains two road names that are linked to the plague. Chainhouse Road, named after the chains that ran across the East end of the town.<\/p>\n<p>The Causeway, is a modern variation of \u2018the corpseway\u2019 so called because of the route that plague victims were transported out of town, to neighbouring Barking church for interment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-06.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s plenty of attractive\u00a0architecture to be found around the small town\u00a0(pop:\u00a04,574).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-07.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A look along the High Street.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-08.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk\/en-436924-bugs-bar-needham-market-suffolk\" target=\"_blank\">Grade II listed Bugs Bar<\/a> is part of the mediaeval Limes Hotel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-09.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Former Tolly Cobbold Pub\u00a0in\u00a0Needham Market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-10.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tolly Cobbold is a former brewing company, with strong roots in Suffolk.\u00a0The original Cobbold brewery was founded in Harwich, Essex in 1723 and in 1746 the Cobbold Cliff Brewery was founded, at Cliff Lane, Ipswich.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-18.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A long sequence of acquisitions eventually saw the company being swallowed up by Greene King [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tolly_Cobbold\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/needham-market-photos-11.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a walk around Needham Market, Suffolk\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 15th century parish church, the church of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.needhammarketparishchurch.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">St. John the Baptist<\/a>, originally a chapel of ease for the parish of Barking, which features a unique double-hammerbeam roof.
