{"id":17394,"date":"2016-11-10T11:50:17","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T11:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=17394"},"modified":"2016-11-09T23:51:36","modified_gmt":"2016-11-09T23:51:36","slug":"there-will-be-fun-victorian-entertainments-at-the-british-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/there-will-be-fun-victorian-entertainments-at-the-british-library\/","title":{"rendered":"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments on show at the British Library in free exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/victorian-entertainments-london-01.jpg\" alt=\"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments at the British Library, London, November 2016 - March 2017\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Running until the 12th March 2017, the British Library&#8217;s &#8220;There Will Be Fun&#8221; exhibition explores\u00a0popular Victorian entertainments which have shaped the theatrical traditions of today.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/victorian-entertainments-london-02.jpg\" alt=\"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments at the British Library, London, November 2016 - March 2017\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The small exhibition focuses on five pivotal performers who influenced the course of popular entertainments in the nineteenth century; from mesmerist Annie De Montford and \u2018Royal Conjuror\u2019 Evanion to \u2018the funniest man on earth\u2019 Dan Leno, circus proprietor \u2018Lord\u2019 George Sanger and magician John Nevil Maskelyne of the Egyptian Hall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/victorian-entertainments-london-03.jpg\" alt=\"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments at the British Library, London, November 2016 - March 2017\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The commercial exploitation of colour printing was\u00a0one of the revolutions of the late nineteenth century, and the show features a collection of wonderfully decorative posters, handbills, advertisements and tickets, displayed together for the first time since they were produced.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/victorian-entertainments-london-04.jpg\" alt=\"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments at the British Library, London, November 2016 - March 2017\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Victorian shows were performed\u00a0in any venue that could host them, from pub backrooms and fairground tents to the music hall stage &#8211; with the railways meaning that popular entertainment, like magic, hypnotism, circus and pantomime, could be seen by a mass audience for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/victorian-entertainments-london-05.jpg\" alt=\"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments at the British Library, London, November 2016 - March 2017\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Exhibition highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Charming and ornate posters, musical scores, programmes and tickets<\/li>\n<li>Original sound recordings of Dan Leno and other contemporary Music Hall performers<\/li>\n<li>Memorabilia from \u2018England\u2019s Home of Mystery\u2019 Egyptian Hall in London<\/li>\n<li>Original magical artefacts on loan from The Magic Circle Museum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/victorian-entertainments-london-06.jpg\" alt=\"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments at the British Library, London, November 2016 - March 2017\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Helen Peden, British Library curator of Victorian Entertainments: There Will Be Fun, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the British Library\u2019s glorious Evanion collection and to present a range of its most fascinating, colourful posters and printed entertainment ephemera that has never been seen in public since the end of the nineteenth century.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/victorian-entertainments-london-07.jpg\" alt=\"There Will be Fun: Victorian entertainments at the British Library, London, November 2016 - March 2017\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Christopher Green, co-curator added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s ironic that every item in this collection was made to exist for a short time; to promote a performance or a performer, but not to be an object of attention themselves. However, these fragile items remain and give us a redolent whiff of what the live shows must have been like.
