Look at the lovely original facade!<\/p>\n<p>The 35th-busiest in the UK, and the 11th-busiest outside London (as of 2010-2011), the station was opened in 1870 by the Midland Railway to the designs of the company architect John Holloway Sanders. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sheffield_station\" target=\"_blank\">Read more here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sheffield-photos-03.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a look around Sheffield in late autumn, November 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sheffield-photos-04.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a look around Sheffield in late autumn, November 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ten years ago, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sheaf_Square\" target=\"_blank\">redevelopment of Sheaf Square<\/a> outside the station was finished, revealing a striking water feature.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sheffield-photos-05.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a look around Sheffield in late autumn, November 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dominating the view from the station is Sheffield Hallam University.<\/p>\n<p>Along with its secondary Collegiate Crescent Campus two miles away, the university is the sixth largest university in the UK with 31,530 students, 4,494 staff and 708 courses. And that&#8217;s a lorra learnin&#8217; going on.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sheffield-photos-06.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a look around Sheffield in late autumn, November 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We stayed at the somewhat tatty Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel, which\u00a0is in a pretty run down part of town.<\/p>\n<p>I took a quick walk around the area and grabbed\u00a0a photo of this splendid building which hosts the\u00a0Sheffield and District African-Caribbean Community Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sadaccasheffield\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">SADACCA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sheffield-photos-07.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a look around Sheffield in late autumn, November 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Britain&#8217;s Biggest Fishing Tackle Dealers\u00a0looks to have packed up its bags.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sheffield-photos-08.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a look around Sheffield in late autumn, November 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ominous sounding Big Gun boozer at 13-17 Wicker, Sheffield. Being past midnight, they&#8217;d all already closed\u00a0for the night. Damn!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sheffield-photos-17.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a look around Sheffield in late autumn, November 2016\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I arrived at the Norfolk Arms there was a rousing community singalong going on in this pub, but sadly they&#8217;d stopped serving. It was built between 1957 and 1961, and in 1998 was given Grade II* listed building status. Following a period of decline, the estate is being renovated by developers Urban Splash.
