Hosting live music seven days a week, bands play well into the night and we were treated to some no-nonsense <em>raaawk&#8217;n&#8217;raaaawl<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-04.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the hugely popular fictional character Sherlock Holmes, was born in Picardy Place in 1859<\/p>\n<p>This bronze statue was erected\u00a0in 1991 by the Federation of Master Builders to mark their 50th anniversary. I fancy it&#8217;s rather a shame that it isn&#8217;t based on what has to be the <em>definitive<\/em> Sherlock Holmes, the wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeremy_Brett\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Brett<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, this gives me the flimsiest of excuses to include one of my favourite ever Jeremy Brett clips &#8211; the hilarious pub fight scene (&#8220;particularly warm, was he?&#8221;):<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"735\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OjKXFBkNE10?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-05.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once described as the \u2018Grey Athens of the North,\u2019 the urban landscape is defined by the use of its <a href=\"http:\/\/earthwise.bgs.ac.uk\/index.php\/Building_stones_of_Edinburgh_-_introduction\" target=\"_blank\">sandstone constructed buildings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-06.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-07.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dominating the city is Edinburgh Castle, which stands high on its position on the Castle Rock.<\/p>\n<p>Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been &#8220;the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world&#8221;.<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">\u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edinburgh_Castle\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-08.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s lots of steps up to the castle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-09.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I loved the old shop signage. Predictably, there&#8217;s now a trendy coffee shop inside,<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-10.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some of the architecture isn&#8217;t exactly what you&#8217;d call the prettiest.<\/p>\n<p><img the world.<\/p>\n<p>Standing in Princes Street Gardens, the tower is 200 feet 6 inches (61.11 m) high, and has a series of viewing platforms reached by a series of narrow spiral staircases giving panoramic views of central Edinburgh and its surroundings. [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_Monument\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/edinburgh-fifty-photos-50.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh in fifty photos: street scenes, architecture, landscapes and the famous castle\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we prepared to head back to London, it rained again so\u00a0I\u00a0felt like I was back in my hometown of Cardiff\u00a0in Wales, which holds the unenviable record of being the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/its-official-cardiff-is-the-wettest-city-in-britain-followed-by-glasgow-and-preston\/\" target=\"_blank\">rainiest city in the UK<\/a>.
