{"id":17943,"date":"2017-07-25T12:44:48","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T11:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=17943"},"modified":"2017-07-25T12:44:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T11:44:48","slug":"the-magnificent-neptunes-grotto-cave-system-in-alghero-on-the-island-of-sardinia-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/the-magnificent-neptunes-grotto-cave-system-in-alghero-on-the-island-of-sardinia-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"The magnificent Neptune&#8217;s Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-01.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Discovered by local fishermen in the 18th century, Neptune&#8217;s Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno) is a stalactite cave near the town of Alghero on the beautiful island of Sardinia, Italy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-02.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now a popular\u00a0tourist attraction, the grotto gets its name from the Roman god of the sea, Neptune.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-03.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The entrance to the grotto lies only around a metre above the sea level at the foot of the 110-metre-high Capo Caccia cliffs, so they can only be safely accessed when the waters below are calm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-28.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For more energetic visitors (that&#8217;s us!), the caves can be accessed by a steep, 654-step\u00a0stairway cut into the cliff in 1954, known locally as the e<i>scala del cabirol<\/i>\u00a0 (goat&#8217;s steps).<\/p>\n<p>These lead from a car park at the top of the cliff down to cave entrance via many twists and turns.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-04.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The majority of visitors arrive via a short boat trip from the port of Alghero, which runs hourly during the summer, but less frequently during spring and autumn.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-05.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Two other grottoes lie nearby, the &#8220;Green grotto&#8221;, which is not open to tourists, and the Grotta di Ricami, which is only accessible from the sea.<\/p>\n<p>The area is a big hit with scuba divers as there&#8217;s plenty of under water caves nearby, including the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nereo_Cave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nereo Cave<\/a>,\u00a0which is considered the biggest marine cave in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-06.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The boat party arrives, pays their money and heads into the caves. My advice is to time your arrival so you get to be in the front of the boat visitors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-07.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The combined length of the cave system is estimated to be around 4 kilometers, but only a few hundred metres are accessible to the public via well marked out paths.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/sardina-nepture-caves-linea-grotto-di-nettuno-08.jpg\" alt=\"The magnificent Neptune's Grotto cave system in Alghero on the island of Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s plenty of mighty stalactite and stalagmite formations to be seen, although the sodium lighting made it hard to
