{"id":18031,"date":"2017-09-06T11:00:41","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T10:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=18031"},"modified":"2017-09-05T19:51:30","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T18:51:30","slug":"in-photos-berkeley-square-and-the-four-loves-sculpture-by-lorenzo-quinn-central-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/in-photos-berkeley-square-and-the-four-loves-sculpture-by-lorenzo-quinn-central-london\/","title":{"rendered":"In photos: Berkeley Square and The Four Loves sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn, central London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berkeley-square-quinn-4-loves-01.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Berkeley Square and The Four Loves sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn, london\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unveiled in April 2017 and only on display until the end of the month, the\u00a0<em>Four Loves<\/em>\u00a0sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn can be seen in\u00a0Berkeley Square, central London.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berkeley-square-quinn-4-loves-13.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Berkeley Square and The Four Loves sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn, london\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A town square in upmarket Mayfair, Berkeley Square was originally laid out in the mid 18th century by architect William Kent, with the\u00a0gardens in the centre open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The park&#8217;s large London Plane trees are among the oldest in central London, being planted in 1789.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berkeley-square-quinn-4-loves-02.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Berkeley Square and The Four Loves sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn, london\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sculpture was unveiled in Berkeley Square as part of Halcyon Gallery\u2019s public art programme and Westminster Council\u2019s City of Sculpture programme.<\/p>\n<p>Artist Lorenzo Quinn explained that he was &#8220;<em>inspired to make this sculpture while reading C.S Lewis\u2019s Four Loves and decided to present the loves as the foundation stones on which the weight of the world should be supported<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berkeley-square-quinn-4-loves-08.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Berkeley Square and The Four Loves sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn, london\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halcyongallery.com\/news\/lorenzo-quinn-the-four-loves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halycon Gallery&#8217;s website<\/a> has more detail:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Echoing the meticulous execution and technique of the Masters of the past, Quinn employs the ancient lost-wax process in his Catalan foundry to create his masterpieces. Touching on themes of equilibrium and evolution,\u00a0<em>The Four Loves<\/em>\u00a0exemplifies the art of harmony, balance and adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>The first stone, representing faith, affection and love, is made out of polished bronze so as to look pure whilst the second stone symbolises passionate love, for which a red stone has been used \u2013 strong yet fragile on its own.<\/p>\n<p>The third stone represents friendship and has been created in polished stainless steel as individuals are reflected in their friends whilst the fourth stone represents family love and is made out of wood &#8211; a warm material, live, organic and continuously growing.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn believes that on top of these formative stones, individuals build the complex puzzle that is their world \u2013 after which they build their relationships and if these are kept in perfect balance, the ultimate goal of long-lasting relationships is achieved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berkeley_Square\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> explains that Berkeley Square was more or less created by accident:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 1696, Berkeley House on Piccadilly became Devonshire House when John Berkeley, 3rd Baron Berkeley of Stratton, sold it to William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement, Lord Berkeley undertook not to build on that part of the land he retained that lay directly behind the house, so keeping the Duke&#8217;s view.<\/p>\n<p>This agreement was continued when the Berkeley land was developed after 1730, and the gardens of Berkeley Square are the termination of that undeveloped strip; to the south the gardens of Lansdowne House were originally also part of it; they were replaced by the current south side of the square.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Famous residents of the square include\u00a0George Canning, UK Prime Minister (1827),\u00a0Winston Churchill,\u00a0Robert Clive of India,\u00a0Charles Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, William Pitt the Younger, British Prime Minister,\u00a0William Waldorf Astor and\u00a0Harry Gordon Selfridge, founder of the Selfridges department store.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"
