At the\u00a0UK Festival Awards<\/a>\u00a0in London on November 30, the Green Gathering\u2019s team was presented with The Greener Festival Award 2017 for outstanding commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating positive social impact.<\/p>\n

It’s a bloody great festival too, with the\u00a0The Green Gathering festival<\/a>\u00a0showcasing live music, spoken word, debates and skillshares at a solar powered four day event every August near Chepstow in Wales.<\/p>\n

\"Green<\/p>\n

Described as \u2018a festival beyond hedonism,’ the festival aims to educate\u00a0as\u00a0it entertains.<\/p>\n

It was the first festival\u00a0to recognise glitter\u00a0as microplastic\u00a0pollution, so now the organisers\u00a0insist that the glitter\u00a0used by traders\u00a0is\u00a0100% biodegradable and\u00a0safe for\u00a0wildlife and\u00a0marine life.<\/p>\n

\"Green<\/p>\n

All food on sale at the festival is vegetarian, with one third of the foodstalls being vegan at this year’s festival. All cups and glasses\u00a0were compostable or reuseable\u00a0and\u00a073%\u00a0of the festival\u2019s waste was recycled.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Green Gathering\u00a0was\u00a0also\u00a0the first UK event to sign up to\u00a0Take A Stand<\/a>, a\u00a0new\u00a0European\u00a0movement\u00a0promoting social cohesion,\u00a0community participation, peaceful dialogue, humanism\u00a0and tolerance.<\/p>\n

\"Green<\/p>\n

With a history going back to the days of free festivals\u00a0and peace convoys, The Green Gathering\u00a0is\u00a0now\u00a0committed to\u00a0working\u00a0alongside\u00a0A Greener Festival<\/a>\u00a0to exchange ideas and innovations with green events around the world, aiming to change behaviour and increase sustainable practices at festivals and beyond.<\/p>\n

In response to the Paris climate change talks of 2015,\u00a0The Show Must Go On<\/a>\u00a0report by festival industry think-tank\u00a0Powerful Thinking<\/a>\u00a0states:<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>As festival organisers we know how to create unforgettable experiences and how to inspire people. We know how to get things done in challenging circumstances and we are accomplished at communicating with audiences\u2026\u00a0We can make a vital and significant contribution to a future that we want our children to inherit\u2026Wecan provide leadership for what is perhaps the most important conversation of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n

60 UK festivals have so far taken this on board, each committing to a 50% reduction in festival-related annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2025\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0Festival Vision 2025 pledge<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Green Gathering director Emma Fordham says:<\/p>\n
