It is a\u00a0civil parish\u00a0and is the centre of the\u00a0Lewes local government district. Its population is now around 17 thousand. The settlement is a traditional market town and centre of communications and in 1264, it was the site of the\u00a0<a title=\"Battle of Lewes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Lewes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Lewes<\/a>. The town&#8217;s landmarks including\u00a0<a title=\"Lewes Castle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewes_Castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lewes Castle<\/a>\u00a0and a 15th-century bookshop. Other notable features of the area include the\u00a0<a title=\"Glyndebourne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glyndebourne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glyndebourne<\/a>\u00a0festival, the\u00a0<a title=\"Lewes Bonfire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewes_Bonfire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lewes Bonfire<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Lewes Pound\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewes_Pound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lewes Pound<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A twitten is a &#8220;narrow path or passage between two walls or hedges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" splendidly named &#8216;Red, White &amp; Blue&#8217; former pub at\u00a0 16 Friars Walk closed around 1960 but its tiled facade remains.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-of-lewes-06.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes in photos: architecture, street scenes and signs and closed pubs, May 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The redundant church of All Saints was given to Lewes Town Council to be used as a Community, Arts and Youth centre in\u00a0September 1980, and it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/asclewes\/events\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still thriving today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewes_Castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lewes Castle<\/a> stands at the highest point of the town on an artificial mound constructed with chalk blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1069, it was originally called Bray Castle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/photos-of-lewes-16.jpg\" alt=\"Lewes in photos:
