{"id":18369,"date":"2018-06-25T15:26:46","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T14:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=18369"},"modified":"2018-06-25T15:26:46","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T14:26:46","slug":"leigh-on-sea-folk-festival-2018-sun-music-mud-beer-and-flying-knickers-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/leigh-on-sea-folk-festival-2018-sun-music-mud-beer-and-flying-knickers-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"Leigh-on-Sea Folk Festival 2018: Sun, music, mud, beer and flying knickers &#8211; photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/leigh-on-sea-festival-2018-01.jpg\" alt=\"Leigh-on-Sea Folk Festival 2018: Sun, mud, music and flying knickers - photos\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a gloriously sunny Sunday afternoon last weekend, I headed east for my second\u00a0Leigh-on-Sea Folk Festival &#8211; and had another fantastic time.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/leigh-on-sea-festival-2018-02.jpg\" alt=\"Leigh-on-Sea Folk Festival 2018: Sun, mud, music and flying knickers - photos\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Established in 1992, the\u00a0Leigh Folk Festival takes place annually at Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, and lays claim to be the\u00a0\u201clargest free folk festival in the county.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking place over four days, the event puts on hundreds of performers across multiple venues in Leigh Old Town, watched by thousands of spectators.<\/p>\n<p>The festival is run with a brilliant spirit, as exemplified by their <a href=\"http:\/\/leighfolkfestival.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website statement:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>Rather than drifting towards becoming another commercially driven, ticketed event, the team of volunteer organisers has doggedly held fast to the original grass roots, access-for-all ethos, and so the festival has retained its unique, eclectic and idiosyncratic atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>Music has the power to make us all feel part of something bigger than ourselves, while nurturing a true sense of community and local pride.<\/p>\n<p>The pastoral, village fete atmosphere of the Library Gardens and the bustling, waterfront location of Old Leigh are both fundamental to the spirit of the weekend, and offer a natural, unpretentious welcome to visitors in their thousands.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>A century ago, Essex proved fertile ground for the first wave of folk song collectors like Cecil Sharp and Ralph Vaughan-Williams, and perhaps some of this legacy persists in our local traditional music scene.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>While Southend and the \u2018Thames Delta\u2019 are probably best known for the blues and pub-rock bands of the 60s and 70s, as well as today\u2019s local heroes, it has always supported a flourishing folk and acoustic music scene and has in recent years seen poetry and storytelling take to the stages, along with traditional dance sides and a truly special procession.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>The Leigh Folk Festival is fantastic, it\u2019s free and it\u2019s all our own.
