{"id":18451,"date":"2018-07-27T10:30:20","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T09:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=18451"},"modified":"2018-07-26T16:48:34","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T15:48:34","slug":"dinant-belgium-a-quick-photo-stroll-around-the-riverside-town-july-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/dinant-belgium-a-quick-photo-stroll-around-the-riverside-town-july-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Dinant, Belgium &#8211; a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-01.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Travelling back from the splendid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/ptit-faystival-where-a-tiny-village-in-belgium-goes-crazy-for-music-july-2018\/\">P&#8217;Tit Festival<\/a>, we had a 50-minute wait for our rail connection at Dinant, so I hotfooted it around the town and grabbed some snaps.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-02.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dinant is located on the River Meuse, in the Belgian province of Namur, and sits underneath a high rocky outcrop.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-03.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-04.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The citadel stands atop the cliff face, while below can be seen the onion-domed church of Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-05.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Populated from\u00a0Neolithic, Celtic, and Roman times, the prosperous town has seen more than its fair share of battles and pillaging, and found itself stuck in the middle of\u00a0 the 16th and 17th centuries wars between\u00a0France\u00a0and\u00a0Spain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-09.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tragedy was to visit the town once again in World War 1:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The city suffered devastation again at the beginning of the\u00a0First World War. On the 15 August 1914, French and German troops fought for the town in the\u00a0Battle of Dinant (1914), among the wounded was Lieut.\u00a0Charles de Gaulle.<\/p>\n<p>On 23 August, 674 inhabitants were summarily executed by\u00a0Saxon troops\u00a0of the\u00a0German Army\u00a0\u2014 the biggest massacre committed by the Germans in 1914. Within a month, some five thousand Belgian and French civilians were killed by the Germans at numerous similar occasion [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dinant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-06.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Happily, today the town makes a healthy living as a base for the tourist industry on the rivers Meuse and Lesse.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some more snaps from my brief visit:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-07.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-08.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium - a quick photo stroll around the riverside town, July 2018\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dominating the town is the Collegiate Church of Our Lady church, a 13th-century Gothic cathedral\u00a0 on the banks of the River Meuse.<\/p>\n<p>The collegiate church replaced a 10th-century Romanesque church which collapsed in 1228, leaving only the North door. Its most iconic part is the separate 16th century pear-shaped bell tower.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dinant-belgium-photos-10.jpg\" alt=\"Dinant, Belgium -
