It hosts the headquarters of the Universit\u00e0 degli Studi di Sassari\u2019s Architecture and Design department, and in 2012 it was the 10th most visited city by tourists in Italy, with many visiting the\u00a0nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/the-magnificent-neptunes-grotto-cave-system-in-alghero-on-the-island-of-sardinia-italy\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Neptune\u2019s Grotto cave system.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/alghero-station-sardinia-03.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Alghero terminus railway station, Sardinia, Italy\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also known as L&#8217;Alguer, Alghero is a town of some 44,000 inhabitants, with part of the population descending from Catalan conquerors from the end of the Middle Ages, when Sardinia was part of the Crown of Aragon.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the Catalan language is co-official (a unique situation in Italy) and known as the Alguer\u00e8s dialect. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alghero#Language_and_culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> has more detail:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A dialect of\u00a0Catalan\u00a0is\u00a0spoken in Alghero, introduced when Catalans settled in the town.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Catalan was replaced as the official language of the Island by Spanish in the 17th century, then by Italian.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent linguistic research showed that 24.1% of the people have\u00a0Algherese Catalan\u00a0as a mother tongue, which is habitually spoken by 18.5% and taught to the children by 8% of the population, whereas 88.2% have some understanding of the language.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Since 1997 Catalan has had official recognition and national and regional laws grant its right to be used in the city. Currently, there has been a revival of the arts in Algherese Catalan, with singers such as\u00a0<a title=\"Franca Masu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franca_Masu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Franca Masu<\/a>\u00a0performing original compositions in the language.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"
