{"id":18808,"date":"2019-04-09T11:30:03","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T10:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=18808"},"modified":"2019-04-09T15:04:22","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T14:04:22","slug":"an-unexpected-steam-locomotive-and-the-rome-express-at-roma-ostiense-railway-station-april-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/an-unexpected-steam-locomotive-and-the-rome-express-at-roma-ostiense-railway-station-april-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"An unexpected steam locomotive and the Rome Express at Roma Ostiense railway station, April 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/steam-train-roma-ostiense-station-03.jpg\" alt=\"An unexpected steam locomotive in Roma Ostiense railway station, April 2019\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In steam-crazy Britain it&#8217;s not unusual to come across a steam locomotive on the ordinary passenger network, but I was surprised to see this locomotive waiting at Roma Ostiense railway station last Friday, 5th April.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/steam-train-roma-ostiense-station-02.jpg\" alt=\"An unexpected steam locomotive in Roma Ostiense railway station, April 2019\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Standing on an adjacent platform was the wonderful Rome Express vintage train.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palatino_Express\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wikipedia<\/a> has more on it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The\u00a0Palatino Express\u00a0or\u00a0Rome Express\u00a0is a historic express train operating between\u00a0Paris,\u00a0France, and\u00a0Rome,\u00a0Italy, since 1890.\u00a0Under the name\u00a0<i>Rome Express<\/i>\u00a0the pre-war service operated daily until interrupted by the Second World War. The British film\u00a0<i><a title=\"Rome Express\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome_Express\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rome Express<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1932) derived its title and its setting from the train. The service was resumed after the war, and has operated with the name\u00a0<i>Palatino Express<\/i>\u00a0since 1969<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A fascinating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railwaywondersoftheworld.com\/rome-express.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">period article<\/a> from 1935 recalls the thrills of travelling from Calais to Rome, with the Rome Express leaving Calais at 12.49 mid-<wbr \/>day and arriving at Rome at 10.25 on the evening of the following day:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In view of the general operating conditions of the period, especially in Italy, this was remarkably good running. The cars contained four berths in each compartment, and in this way were little superior to the original rolling-<wbr \/>stock on the \u201cOrient Express\u201d. Gas lighting and steam heating were incorporated. The exterior of the old train was handsome enough, though some of the old-<wbr \/>fashioned Continental locomotives which hauled it at that time were of rather alarming appearance. The four-<wbr \/>berths compartments gave way to the double berth type in 1901, and single-<wbr \/>berth compartments, generally similar to those on British trains, but convertible for day use, appeared in 1923.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/steam-train-roma-ostiense-station-04.jpg\" alt=\"An unexpected steam locomotive in Roma Ostiense railway station, April 2019\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Built in 19015, the locomotive is a Ferrovie dello Stato (FS, Italian State Railways) Class 625 (Italian: Gruppo 625), a class 2-6-0 &#8216;mogul&#8217; steam locomotive.<\/p>\n<p>The class is commonly known by the nickname Signorine (Italian for &#8216;young ladies&#8217;), because of their perceived grace and beauty compared to other locomotives.<\/p>\n<p>Designed for mixed-traffic operation (use on both passenger and freight services), the locos could operate on steep gradients, and the first examples of the class entered service upon completion in 1910, with the final operational examples were withdrawn from mainline service in 1976. [<a href=\"https:\/\/wikivividly.com\/wiki\/FS_Class_625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/steam-train-roma-ostiense-station-05.jpg\" alt=\"An unexpected steam locomotive in Roma Ostiense railway station, April 2019\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a tip off from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.net\/forums\/threads\/misc-steam-railway-traction-station-and-rail-related-news.338047\/page-17#post-16002271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">urban75 forum<\/a>, I learnt that the loco has been used for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/vaticancityandholysee\/11859260\/Vatican-launches-train-service-to-visit-Popes-summer-palace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vatican steam service<\/a>,.
