{"id":19125,"date":"2019-10-09T12:23:55","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T11:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=19125"},"modified":"2019-10-09T12:23:55","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T11:23:55","slug":"in-photos-street-art-slogans-and-anarchist-graffiti-in-exarchia-central-athens-greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/in-photos-street-art-slogans-and-anarchist-graffiti-in-exarchia-central-athens-greece\/","title":{"rendered":"In photos: Street art, slogans and anarchist graffiti in Exarchia, central Athens, Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/street-art-exarchia-athens-08.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Street art and anarchist graffiti of Exarchia, Athens, Greece\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Following on from my set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/in-photos-exarchia-athens-at-night-street-scenes-bars-street-art-and-rooftop-views\/\">photos taken around Exarchia at night<\/a>, here&#8217;s a selection of images showing off some of the abundant street art in the area:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/street-art-exarchia-athens-02.jpg\" alt=\"Street art and anarchist graffiti of Exarchia, Athens, Greece\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exarcheia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wikipedia<\/a> describes the unique neighborhood of Exarchia:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Exarcheia is a place where many intellectuals and artists live and an area where many socialist, anarchist, and anti-fascist groups are accommodated. Exarcheia is also an art hub where theatrical shows and concerts are held around the central square.<\/p>\n<p>The headquarters of PASOK, a Greek political party that supported austerity measures dictated by the European Union in 2009, are also located in the neighborhood and has been a target of attacks by anarchists.<\/p>\n<p>Police stations and other symbols of authority (and capitalism) such as banks are often targets of far-leftist groups. One can find numerous anti-capitalist graffiti in the district.<\/p>\n<p>Protests that begin in Exarcheia evidence diverse political formations and coalitions, including dispossessed young people, migrants, anti-authoritarians, anarchists, and Greek citizens from the moderate to extreme on both ends of the political spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>The European refugee crisis resulted in an enormous migration to Greece &#8211; in 2017, 55,000 people throughout Greece were registered as permanent residents.<\/p>\n<p>When borders between Greece and the European Union were closed, many migrants were forced to stay in camps that lacked housing or hygiene infrastructure. As a result, refugees and migrants sought alternative options within Athens, including squats in the Exarcheia neighborhood.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/street-art-exarchia-athens-01.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Street art and anarchist graffiti of Exarchia, Athens, Greece\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img
