{"id":19388,"date":"2020-03-06T10:30:26","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T10:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=19388"},"modified":"2020-03-05T23:31:14","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T23:31:14","slug":"dundee-photos-desperate-dan-street-scenes-architecture-and-tunnocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/dundee-photos-desperate-dan-street-scenes-architecture-and-tunnocks\/","title":{"rendered":"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture, Tunnock&#8217;s and salt shaker seediness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-01.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, I headed up north to Dundee, a Scottish east coast trading port once known as the city of &#8220;jute, jam and journalism&#8221; and &#8211; of course &#8211; the home of The Beano and Dandy comics.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-02.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I know this won&#8217;t be of interest to many readers, but I was delighted to find an old school InterCity 125 taking us from Glasgow to Dundee.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-03.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Street art by the station.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-04.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The town was also the location of one of the worst rail disasters in British history, the\u00a0<a title=\"Tay Bridge disaster\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tay_Bridge_disaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tay Bridge disaster<\/a>.\u00a0The first\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tay Rail Bridge\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tay_Rail_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tay Rail Bridge<\/a> was opened in 1878 and collapsed some 18 months later during a storm, sending a passenger train into the waters below with the loss of 75 lives.<sup id=\"cite_ref-44\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Above is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tay_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replacement Tay Bridge<\/a> which was completed in 1887.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-05.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-06.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Who would have thought that a cafe with a name as wholesome as Aunty Betty&#8217;s Cafe would get closed down after a &#8220;seedy game of spin the bottle with a salt shaker&#8221;? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk\/fp\/dundee-cafe-boarded-up-after-its-creepy-owner-organised-sex-games-in-the-basement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-07.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-08.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Any idea what the hell this thing is?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-09.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Faded office sign for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottisharchitects.org.uk\/architect_full.php?id=201244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foggie &amp; Son Architects<\/a> who ceased business in 1920, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Alkali_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Alkali Compan<\/a>y.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>United Alkali Company Limited was a British chemical company formed in 1890, employing the Leblanc process to produce soda ash for the glass, textile, soap, and paper industries. A barque-rigged auxiliary steamship built for Antarctic research, and launched in 1901, the Discovery . was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-40.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"V&amp;A Dundee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/V%26A_Dundee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">V&amp;A Dundee<\/a> Museum of Design designed by\u00a0<a title=\"Kengo Kuma\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kengo_Kuma\">Kengo Kuma<\/a> was opened in September 2018 and is built south of Craig Harbour onto the River Tay.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/dundee-photos-41.jpg\" alt=\"Dundee photos: Desperate Dan, street scenes, architecture and Tunnocks\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Disused tram lines.
