Second left in the top row is Mike Harris (sax), next to Cecil and Darnell, with friends Jackie and Sharon joining the group.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/wavelength-02.jpg\" alt=\"Bands of my past: Apartment, the East London soul\/funk outfit with a different line up for every gig\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Above can be seen the singer Ray Howard &#8211; it was essentially his band &#8211; and he was chasing more success after a getting a taste of the high life with his previous band Wavelength.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;d scored a Top 20 hit with &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=77zyOb_lXNI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hurry Home<\/a>&#8216; the previous year, a syrupy wedge of schmaltz written by <a href=\"http:\/\/steve-thompson.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Thompson<\/a>, a songwriter and record producer who was seen as a major influence in the rise of NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"19460\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/failed-bands-of-my-past-east-london-soul-funk-hustlers-apartment\/wavelength-2\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/wavelength-2.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"620,382\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"wavelength-2\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/wavelength-2.jpg\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/wavelength-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/wavelength-2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/wavelength-2-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The eight-piece band also included my old chum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/stewart.pettey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stewart Pettey<\/a> on bass &#8211; a year later we&#8217;d go on to record the minor indie hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Lester-Square-And-The-Square-Deal-Surfers-The-Plug\/release\/2719192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Plug<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lester.square.9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lester Square<\/a> and the Square Deal Surfers together.<\/p>\n<p>Just about everyone in Apartment was busy trying to bag elusive record deals with their own bands, so this venture was all about having fun, and that was always on the cards with East End wideboy\/hussler\/blagger Ray at the helm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/wavelength-03.jpg\" alt=\"Bands of my past: Apartment, the East London soul\/funk outfit with a different line up for every gig\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[<em>Rehearsals in my East Ham flat<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>We used to rehearse in the bedroom of my awful damp flat in East Ham, and it was always quite a squeeze to get everyone in. Happily, the neighbours were really cool about the racket we made.<\/p>\n<p>They were also impressed when Ray drove up once to collect the band&#8217;s gear in a Rolls Royce &#8211; it turned out he worked for a chauffeur company, so had &#8216;borrowed&#8217; the transport for the night.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/wavelength-01.jpg\" alt=\"Bands of my past: Apartment, the East London soul\/funk outfit with a different line up for every gig\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My diary from July 83 records that we played a very lively under 18s gig at the Ilford Palais at the beginning of the month, which saw the band fending off amorous youngsters and an enthusiastic junior stage invasion, with three of us being asked to judge a dancing competition later.<\/p>\n<p>Strange days indeed.<\/p>\n<p>My involvement with the band only lasted another month, with my final appearance being in August 1983 at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-rip.com\/places\/more-venues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fulham Greyhound<\/a>, a long lost but once important part of London&#8217;s pub-rock scene.<\/p>\n<h2>Home rehearsals<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/wavelength-04.jpg\" alt=\"Bands of my past: Apartment, the East London soul\/funk outfit with a different line up for every gig\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[<em>My damp, flea-infested, furniture mite-plagued room in Grosvenor Road, E6<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Two of my other bands at the time used to rehearse in the same flat &#8211; one was a ramshackle gloomy goth rock band featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.net\/forums\/threads\/rip-mick-atkins-from-wasted-youth.306526\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mick Atkins<\/a> from Wasted Youth.\u00a0The other band was the rather splendid <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Dream_Academy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dream Academy<\/a>, who went on to have an international hit with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5UXnulANF8g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Life in A Northern Town<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I can remember practising that song in my bedroom and thinking it was a brilliant tune, but unfathomably, declined to keep on working with them just as they went off to soaraway Stateside success. I was always pretty good at making the wrong decisions throughout most of my music career.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 1983, my time was increasingly being taken up by an electro-pop outfit called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/posters7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dance On A Telephone<\/a> who got as far as recording several radio sessions and demos for major labels, touring Austria and being featured in mags like Smash Hits and The Face. The band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0P0HOnYI7v0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">briefly reformed in 2017<\/a> with Mike back on guitar.
