{"id":20131,"date":"2021-08-12T12:59:09","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T11:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=20131"},"modified":"2021-08-13T13:40:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T12:40:38","slug":"underwhelmed-by-the-mound-a-photographic-journey-up-londons-newest-tourist-attraction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/underwhelmed-by-the-mound-a-photographic-journey-up-londons-newest-tourist-attraction\/","title":{"rendered":"Underwhelmed by The Mound &#8211; a photographic journey up London&#8217;s newest tourist attraction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-mound-01.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a trip up The Mound in Marble Arch, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Opening late last month, The Mound is a 25 metre high artificial hill located next to the Marble Arch monument.<\/p>\n<p>Swiftly branded London\u2019s \u2018worst attraction,\u2019 admission prices plummeted within days from the initial asking price of \u00a38 per person, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danbarker\/status\/1419787309260627970\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to \u00a36.50<\/a>, to \u00a34 before giving up altogether and offering the trip up the green-clad heap of scaffolding for free.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-mound-02.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a trip up The Mound in Marble Arch, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Westminster council &#8211; who commissioned this daft idea &#8211; issued a statement apologising to the first paying visitors, saying that they were, &#8220;resolving teething problems as they emerge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>They told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/visitors-marble-arch-mound-westminster-council-refunds-london-worst-attraction-b947846.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evening Standard<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are aware that elements of the Marble Arch Mound are not yet ready for visitors. We are working hard to resolve this over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In light of the delay, we are offering anybody who has booked a visit during the first week a return ticket free of charge so that they can enjoy the full experience and the landscape once it has had time to bed in and grow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>People who visited the mound today, and people who are booked for the rest of the week, including the weekend, will be contacted and offered a refund and a free return ticket so they can see the mound at its best<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-mound-03.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a trip up The Mound in Marble Arch, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Facing a ton of criticism, Stuart Love, Westminster\u2019s Chief Executive, posted up a statement shortly after The Mound opened:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019re very sorry that the Marble Arch Mound wasn\u2019t ready for visitors when it opened earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>London\u2019s businesses and residents have suffered through the pandemic and we built the Mound as part of our bigger plan to get people back into the City and into the shops, restaurants, theatres and to see the amazing sights the West End has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We wanted to open the Mound in time for the summer holidays and we did not want to disappoint people who had already booked tickets. We made a mistake and we apologise to everyone who hasn\u2019t had a great experience on their visit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind we\u2019re going to make The Mound free for everyone to climb throughout August.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now is the time to bring the buzz back to central London and to see people visiting the West End again. We are working hard to resolve the outstanding issues and create an attraction worthy of our fantastic city. It\u2019s going to look great and be an amazing experience once we\u2019ve got it ready!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our ticketing operator SeeTickets will be in touch those who had already booked tickets for August to offer a refund and a free return visit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are very much looking forward to welcoming visitors back so they can enjoy everything London has to offer and Arch, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Westminster were hoping that up to 1000 visitors a day would climb the 130 steps to the bleak viewing platform, but footfall was very light yesterday, despite the tickets
