{"id":25058,"date":"2023-03-19T14:15:34","date_gmt":"2023-03-19T14:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=25058"},"modified":"2023-03-19T14:18:48","modified_gmt":"2023-03-19T14:18:48","slug":"in-photos-whorled-here-after-here-after-here-a-spiral-of-road-signs-at-somerset-house-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/in-photos-whorled-here-after-here-after-here-a-spiral-of-road-signs-at-somerset-house-london\/","title":{"rendered":"In photos: Whorled (Here After Here After Here) &#8211; a spiral of road signs at  Somerset House, London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whorled-somerset-house-13.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Whorled (Here After Here After Here), Somerset House, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On view until the 23rd April 2023 is this rather wonderful installation Mumbai based artist Jitish Kallat, which takes the form of two, 336m-long intersecting spirals with signposts indicating distances to places near and far.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whorled-somerset-house-02.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Whorled (Here After Here After Here), Somerset House, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The website explains more:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whorled (Here After Here After Here) is conceived as a seismic ripple or a galactic whorl, spiralling outwards from the centre of the courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The work draws upon sacred geometry and alchemical diagrams, and like much of Kallat\u2019s work, it interlaces the immediate and the cosmic, the past and present.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two vast, extended scrolls form interlocking spirals and a continuum of text and symbols which follow the visual identity of the UK&#8217;s road signage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These signs indicate the distance from Somerset House to locations across the planet and beyond, pointing to celestial bodies, such as the Moon, Mars, and distant stars in the Milky Way.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whorled-somerset-house-03.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: Whorled (Here After Here After Here), Somerset House, London\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As Kallat\u2019s work playfully reorients the courtyard in relation to a myriad of destinations, both terrestrial and celestial, visitors are invited to take pathways through the interlaced spirals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Routes through the work map circular movements through space and time.
