{"id":2540,"date":"2010-10-27T10:00:40","date_gmt":"2010-10-27T09:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=2540"},"modified":"2010-10-27T00:28:38","modified_gmt":"2010-10-26T23:28:38","slug":"cardigan-old-railway-station-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/cardigan-old-railway-station-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardigan old railway station, Wales [photos]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardigan-railway-station-wales.jpg\" alt=\"Cardigan old railway station, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the June of 2009, we spent a week in the lovely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/wales\/cilgerran-fforest-wales.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fforest campsite<\/a> near Cardigan, west Wales, and being the railway spod I am, I simply had to find out what remained of the old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/wales\/cardigan-railway-station.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cardigan railway terminus<\/a>, which closed\u00a0completely in 1963\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>We walked to the old station and discovered that there was a\u00a0surprising\u00a0number of railway features still intact, including the goods shed &#8211; complete with original canopy &#8211; and some of the\u00a0original\u00a0platform.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardigan-railway-station-wales-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cardigan old railway station, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a similar view of the station from 1958. \u00a0You can see the goods shed to the right, with the\u00a0single\u00a0passenger platform to the left.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0the line ran through\u00a0beautifully\u00a0picturesque\u00a0countryside, the winding terrain and tight curves meant that train speeds averaged \u00a0as low as 15mph from Cardigan to Whitland.<br \/>\n[Pic: HC Casserley]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardigan-railway-station-wales-2.jpg\" alt=\"Cardigan old railway station, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More views of the goods shed, which looks to be in excellent condition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardigan-railway-station-wales-3.jpg\" alt=\"Cardigan old railway station, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardigan-railway-station-wales-4.jpg\" alt=\"Cardigan old railway station, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Old goods wagon, presumably left on site after the railway closed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More info<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardigan is a really lovely place to visit &#8211; the absolute don of abandoned railway research &#8211; has seen fit to use some of my photos in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.disused-stations.org.uk\/c\/cardigan\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">comprehensive and fascinating \u00a0history of the entire Cardigan branch.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great read, although some of the photos of the\u00a0crumbling\u00a0old buildings along the line are rather sad to see &#8211;
