{"id":2545,"date":"2010-11-01T10:15:56","date_gmt":"2010-11-01T10:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=2545"},"modified":"2010-11-01T01:20:31","modified_gmt":"2010-11-01T01:20:31","slug":"desolate-abandoned-pullman-coaches-marazion-cornwall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/desolate-abandoned-pullman-coaches-marazion-cornwall\/","title":{"rendered":"Abandoned and desolate Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/marazion-pullman-coaches-01.jpg\" alt=\"Desolate abandoned Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I spotted several old Pullman railway coaches in a state of ruin during\u00a0a trip to Cornwall in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Once the byword for upmarket, \u00a0luxury train travel, several of these once glorious carriages had been dumped at Marazion station in the 1960s and put to use as camping coaches.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/marazion-pullman-coaches-02.jpg\" alt=\"Desolate abandoned Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Years of criminal neglect had seen the fine varnished wood and\u00a0exquisite\u00a0paintwork of the carriages being stripped away in the sea air, \u00a0leaving them in a terrible state.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/marazion-pullman-coaches-03.jpg\" alt=\"Desolate abandoned Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The coaches were on a strip of track next to the abandoned station at Marazion, which closed to passengers on 5th Oct 1964. It&#8217;s now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/railway\/marazion1.html\" target=\"_blank\">been\u00a0converted\u00a0to private housing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/marazion-pullman-coaches-04.jpg\" alt=\"Desolate abandoned Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Juno&#8217;, a 1923 brake parlour car looks forlorn, while just beyond it can be seen the shell of the burned out 1923 coach, &#8216;Aurora&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/marazion-pullman-coaches-06.jpg\" alt=\"Desolate abandoned Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/marazion-pullman-coaches-07.jpg\" alt=\"Desolate abandoned Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sad remains of \u00a0&#8216;Calais&#8217;, once a luxury 12 wheel parlour car, built in 1921.<\/p>\n<p>All of the remaining coaches at Marazion\u00a0disappeared\u00a0shortly after these photos were taken, with a posting on the Pullman Society&#8217;s website in September 2003 reporting that the coaches had &#8220;vanished&#8221; and been replaced by an &#8220;an ominous pile of charred timber and a few odd wheel sets&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Petworth survival<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/marazion-pullman-coaches-08.jpg\" alt=\"Desolate abandoned Pullman coaches, Marazion, Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a happier note, two of the coaches at Marazion were rescued in the late 1990s and have subsequently been fully restored to their former glory at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/petworth\/pet02.html\" target=\"_blank\">Petworth railway station<\/a>, where they now serve as luxury hotel rooms &#8211; we stayed there for a weekend a few years back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See more here<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/railway\/marazion.html\" target=\"_blank\">Marazion station and abandoned\u00a0coaches, 2003<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/railway\/marazion1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Marazion station, \u00a02005<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spotted several old Pullman railway coaches in a state of ruin during\u00a0a trip to Cornwall in 2003.
