{"id":265,"date":"2008-07-08T00:27:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-08T00:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/u75blog\/?p=265"},"modified":"2008-07-08T00:27:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-08T00:27:00","slug":"a-brick-lane-curry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-brick-lane-curry\/","title":{"rendered":"A Brick Lane curry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A curry at Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, off Brick Lane, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East End of London, 2008\" border=\"0\" height=\"272\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/brick-lane-curry-01.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/><br \/>Brick Lane runs from Bethnal Green in the north, passes through Spitalfields and on towards Whitechapel High Street.<\/p>\n<p>Situated in the heart of London&#8217;s Sylheti Bangladeshi community, the street is known as the curry capital of the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A curry at Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, off Brick Lane, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East End of London, 2008\" border=\"0\" height=\"423\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/brick-lane-curry-02.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/><br \/>Walking down the street you can expect a full hustle from waiters and restaurant employers (amusingly described as &#8216;Tikka Touts&#8217;) hell bent on luring you into their premises.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A curry at Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, off Brick Lane, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East End of London, 2008\" border=\"0\" height=\"317\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/brick-lane-curry-03.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/><br \/>As you progress down the street, expect to be offered ever-improving offers; &#8220;Twenty five percent off &#8211; but only if you take our offer now!&#8221;, &#8220;Free first round of drinks plus thirty per cent off!&#8221; and my favourite, &#8220;Special VIP table!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>My tip: decide where you want to go first and ring up them up beforehand to sort out a good deal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A curry at Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, off Brick Lane, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East End of London, 2008\" border=\"0\" height=\"328\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/brick-lane-curry-04.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/><br \/>We went to Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, just off Brick Lane.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A curry at Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, off Brick Lane, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East End of London, 2008\" border=\"0\" height=\"305\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/brick-lane-curry-05.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/><br \/>The food was very good, the restaurant clean and the service reasonably swift, although our promised &#8216;free Cobra beer&#8217; turned out to be a glass of some nondescript lager.<\/p>\n<p>The promised discount also needed some firm renegotiation after they sneakily added a clause that everyone had to order a main course.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A curry at Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, off Brick Lane, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East End of London, 2008\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/brick-lane-curry-06.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/><br \/>Things got a little tatty when we headed out to the outside loo that had a worryingly large pile of toilet rolls stacked up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A curry at Cafe Raj on 42 Hanbury St, off Brick Lane, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East End of London, 2008\" border=\"0\" height=\"293\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/brick-lane-curry-07.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/><br \/>I loved this &#8216;Chef of the Year&#8217; sign.
