{"id":2982,"date":"2010-12-30T10:15:17","date_gmt":"2010-12-30T10:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=2982"},"modified":"2010-12-29T23:53:10","modified_gmt":"2010-12-29T23:53:10","slug":"spillers-records-cardiff-moves-to-the-morgan-arcade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/spillers-records-cardiff-moves-to-the-morgan-arcade\/","title":{"rendered":"Spillers Records, Cardiff moves to the Morgan Arcade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/spillers-records-cardiff-01.jpg\" alt=\"Spillers Records, Cardiff moves to the Morgan Arcade\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally losing the battle to stay in their premises by The Hayes in central Cardiff, the much loved\u00a0Spillers record store closed on June 26th, 2010,\u00a0reopening\u00a0in the nearby Morgan Arcade a month later.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->One of the last surviving indie records stores left in Wales, Spillers was a lifeline to non mainstream music when I was\u00a0growing\u00a0up in Cardiff, and it&#8217;s a real shame that they&#8217;ve had to move out of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/wales\/spillers-cardiff.html\" target=\"_blank\">original\u00a0location<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/spillers-records-cardiff-02.jpg\" alt=\"Spillers Records, Cardiff moves to the Morgan Arcade\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I make a point of supporting the store by always buying something when I&#8217;m up in my hometown (I&#8217;ve got at least three of their t-shirts already!), but I have to say I was hugely disappointed by their new premises at 31 Morgan Arcade.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/spillers-records-cardiff-05.jpg\" alt=\"Spillers Records, Cardiff moves to the Morgan Arcade\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it&#8217;s\u00a0because\u00a0they&#8217;re still settling in, but the new shop had none of the charm of the old store, seeming rather impersonal and cold.<\/p>\n<p>The downstairs area felt barren and unloved and there seemed to be a whole lot less stock on display, while the\u00a0upstairs\u00a0area was just plain odd with nothing more than a couple of vinyl record racks in a very bright white room.<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of the old\u00a0Spillers\u00a0was that it was a great place to hang out, browse records and\u00a0perhaps\u00a0be persuaded by the staff&#8217;s personal recommendations, but something seems to have been lost in the move.<\/p>\n<p>I know it&#8217;s tough for all records stores at the moment, and I&#8217;m only writing this in the hope that the feedback may prove helpful.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d *really* hate to see Spillers\u00a0disappear\u00a0for good, but I fear that in its present incarnation it&#8217;s unlikely to stop the decline.
