{"id":30107,"date":"2024-03-07T08:00:56","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T08:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=30107"},"modified":"2024-03-07T15:36:11","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T15:36:11","slug":"in-photos-a-quick-walk-around-lititz-in-lancaster-county-pennsylvania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/in-photos-a-quick-walk-around-lititz-in-lancaster-county-pennsylvania\/","title":{"rendered":"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-01.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Declared to be the &#8216;Coolest Small Town in America&#8217; in some <a href=\"https:\/\/lancasterpa.com\/blog\/happenings\/lititz-voted-coolest-small-town-in-america-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daft poll<\/a> ten years ago, Lititz is home to under 10,000 souls and is located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>I paid the town a quick visit with my good friend Tara a few months ago and grabbed these pics:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-02.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sturgis_Pretzel_House\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sturgis Pretzel House<\/a> in Lititz was founded in 1861 and is the oldest commercial pretzel bakery in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still producing pretzels today and is, inevitably, a popular tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-03.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lititz,_Pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> gives an overview to Lititz&#8217;s history:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lititz was founded by members of the Moravian Church in 1756 and was named after a castle in Bohemia near the village of Kunvald where the ancient Bohemian Brethren&#8217;s Church had been founded in 1457.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The roots of the Moravian Brethren&#8217;s Church date back to the ancient Bohemian Brethren&#8217;s Church. It was one of the four leading Moravian communities in the Northeastern United States (Bethlehem, Emmaus and Nazareth, each in Pennsylvania, were the three others).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For a century, only Moravians were permitted to live in Lititz. Until the middle of the 19th century, only members of the congregation could own houses; others were required to lease. The lease system was abolished in 1855, just five years before the beginning of the Civil War.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-04.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Main Street is full of restaurants, cafes, independent shops and bars.<\/p>\n<p>The nearby rock concert production company, Rock Lititz,\u00a0 has a world class show production stage, attracting \u00a0international artists to the area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-07.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-08.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Reading and Columbia Railroad operated passenger service through downtown Lititz until 1952.<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk Southern continues to operate freight service to Lancaster, while the line between Lititz and Ephrata has been converted into a rail trail.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-05.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Passenger services have long ceased to run in Lititz, although a replica of the original train station serves as a visitor centre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-09.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk around Lititz in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The iconic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilbur_Chocolate_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wilbur Chocolate Company<\/a> factory in Lititz was closed in 2016 and the building converted into condos.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-06.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a quick walk Lititz.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lindenhall.org\/about-linden-hall\/history-of-linden-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Founded in 1746<\/a> by members of the Moravian Church, Linden Hall is the oldest boarding school for girls in continuous operation in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lititz-pennsylvania-15.jpg\"
