{"id":3073,"date":"2011-01-12T10:15:21","date_gmt":"2011-01-12T10:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=3073"},"modified":"2011-01-12T22:46:21","modified_gmt":"2011-01-12T22:46:21","slug":"whitechapel-gallery-buzzing-light-bulbs-and-coffee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/whitechapel-gallery-buzzing-light-bulbs-and-coffee\/","title":{"rendered":"Whitechapel Gallery &#8211; buzzing light bulbs and coffee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whitechapel-art-gallery-01.jpg\" alt=\"Whitechapel Gallery - buzzing light bulbs and coffee\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1901 as one of the first publicly-funded galleries for temporary exhibitions in the capital, Whitechapel Gallery is a free gallery, located right next to Aldgate East tube station, east London.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The striking building was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, and the\u00a0gallery enjoyed a major refurbishment in 1986 with further work in 2009 seeing the adjacent Passmore Edwards Library being incorporated into the space.<\/p>\n<p>This effectively  doubled the physical size of the Gallery and nearly tripled the available exhibition space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whitechapel-art-gallery-02.jpg\" alt=\"Whitechapel Gallery - buzzing light bulbs and coffee\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Situated in\u00a0darkened room, <em>Current Disturbance<\/em> is a piece by British-Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum and is\u00a0made up of stacked wire cages and flickering light bulbs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whitechapel-art-gallery-03.jpg\" alt=\"Whitechapel Gallery - buzzing light bulbs and coffee\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lights all flicker on and off together to the sound of a loud and rather unnerving buzzing noise.\u00a0I wouldn&#8217;t want to spend too long in the room, but I rather liked it.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is at the gallery until 6 March 2011.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whitechapel-art-gallery-04.jpg\" alt=\"Whitechapel Gallery - buzzing light bulbs and coffee\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With all the lights, the darkness and the discordant buzzing it was a bit like being at an industrial minimalist techno party.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whitechapel-art-gallery-05.jpg\" alt=\"Whitechapel Gallery - buzzing light bulbs and coffee\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Richard Wentworth\u2019s,\u00a0<em>A Confiscation of String<\/em>, &#8220;explores ideas of currency, exchange and the treasure in a cabinet containing examples of string, both natural and manmade, brought to the Gallery by manufacturers, artists, collectors and hobbyists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whitechapel-art-gallery-06.jpg\" alt=\"Whitechapel Gallery - buzzing light bulbs and coffee\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a rather splendid cafe at the Whitechapel Gallery that&#8217;s a bit like our old central London favourite, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/photographers-gallery.html\" target=\"_blank\">Photographers&#8217; Gallery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s rather hidden away though, and you have to\u00a0navigate\u00a0a\u00a0circuitous\u00a0route\u00a0upstairs\u00a0and around the back of the\u00a0building\u00a0to find the place.
