{"id":308,"date":"2008-04-21T00:06:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-21T00:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/u75blog\/?p=308"},"modified":"2008-04-21T00:06:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-21T00:06:00","slug":"more-lost-pubs-of-brixton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/more-lost-pubs-of-brixton\/","title":{"rendered":"More lost pubs of Brixton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pubs are still continuing to disappear from the area at a worrying rate of knots. <\/p>\n<p>Today I took a look up Lyham Road, Brixton SW2, a road that has lost no less than <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">four<\/span> of its five pubs in the last five years or so.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/images\/royal-oak-brixton-01.jpg\" alt=\"Royal Oak\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d rushed up to catch the last rites of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/royal-oak-sw2.html\">Royal Oak<\/a> at 2, Lyham Road &#8211; the pub was open for business only a couple of weeks ago, but the digger moved in late last week and had promptly set to work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/images\/royal-oak-brixton-10.jpg\" alt=\"Royal Oak\" \/><br \/>Attractive etched glass window on half-demolished wall. Judging by the destruction of the rest of the pub, I don&#8217;t think any of these lovely windows are going to be preserved.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/images\/waggon-and-horses-08.jpg\" alt=\"Waggon and Horses\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another casualty was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/waggon-and-horses-sw2.html\">Waggon and Horses<\/a> at 206 Lyham Road, which, despite appearances, has been closed for some time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/images\/duke-of-cornwall-01.jpg\" alt=\"Duke of Cornwall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/duke-of-cornwall.html\">Duke of Cornwall<\/a> at 89, Lyham Road has had some rather bizarre alternations made to it, and the building looks quite ugly with its bolt on balconies..<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/images\/red-lion-01.jpg\" alt=\"Red Lion\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s barely anything left of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/red-lion-lyham-road.html\">Red Lion<\/a> at 191, Lyham Road, with the frontage being completely rebuilt.<\/p>\n<p>Happily, the sole remaining boozer in Lyham Road, the Prince of Wales, appears to be in reasonable health for now.<\/p>\n<p>See the ever growing list of closed Brixton pubs here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/bars\/lost-pubs.html\">Lost pubs of Brixton<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pubs are still continuing to disappear from the area at a worrying rate of knots.
