The shop has been closed for several years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-03.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wilburton Textiles used to operate from Number 19. The area was famous for its textile trade.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-04.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Derelict and long abandoned shop at number 17, Toynbee Street, with the old doorway in a poor state of repair.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-05.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-06.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The premises of the\u00a0intriguing-sounding, &#8220;Binsam Impex Limited.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To the left (out of view) is a general store carrying the snappy name, &#8220;New Continental Food Stores Groceries Halal Meat 21-23.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s shown as still being open in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/WS8Z\" target=\"_blank\">Google Street View<\/a>, but the graffiti-covered shutters were down when we went past, and it looked as run down as the other shops.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-07.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The remains of the\u00a0slowly\u00a0disintegrating\u00a0&#8216;Lightmake&#8217; sign at number 29. Most of the upstairs room windows were boarded up along the row.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-08.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The peeling frontage of the Lahoree Restaurant is in such a dreadful state, I sincerely hope the takeaway isn&#8217;t still serving food.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve no idea who Daniel Stone is, and aren&#8217;t really that bothered to find out, thanks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-09.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The restaurant exterior is in a shocking state.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-10.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-11.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>General view of the row of shops looking north.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the generally dismal condition of these buildings, I can only assume that they&#8217;ve\u00a0been\u00a0earmarked for demolition (with the inevitable luxury &#8216;lifestyle&#8217; flats to follow), but does anyone know for sure?<\/p>\n<p>Thans to a poster on the [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.net\/vbulletin\/threads\/341430-Derelict-shops-on-Toynbee-Street-E1-any-info?\" target=\"_blank\">bulletin boards<\/a>]I have learnt that the road used to be called Shepherd Street and is marked as such on the Booth Poverty Map of 1898-99, which classifies the households along it as &#8216;Mixed, some comfortable, others poor&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/toynbee-street-spitalfields-london-e1-12.jpg\" alt=\"Derelict shops, Toynbee Street, Spitalfields, London E1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s still some trading taking place on Toynbee Street &#8211;
