{"id":3252,"date":"2011-01-28T15:59:29","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T15:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=3252"},"modified":"2011-01-28T16:01:43","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T16:01:43","slug":"a-winters-walk-around-llangollen-and-chirk-north-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-winters-walk-around-llangollen-and-chirk-north-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"A winter&#8217;s walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-01.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The recent announcement of the\u00a0untimely\u00a0demise of the wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/wrexham-shropshire-railway-company-closes\/\">Wrexham &amp; Shropshire railway<\/a> prompted me to look up some photos from my last trip with them.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Back in late 2008, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/walks\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">urban75 walking massive<\/a> met up at London\u00a0Marylebone\u00a0and hopped on a W&amp;S train up to Chirk.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/wales\/wrexham-shropshire-railway.html\"> journey\u00a0was delightful<\/a>, and things got even better when we got to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/wales\/glyn-ceiriog-llangollen-walk.html\" target=\"_blank\">walk from our remote bunkhouse<\/a> into the lovely town of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/wales\/llangollen-town-wales.html\" target=\"_blank\">Llangollen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-02.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-03.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Waking over windy hills into Llangollen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-04.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Llagollen railway station.<\/p>\n<p>Closed in 1965, with goods traffic following in 1968, the station was saved by the Llangollen Railway Society who now operate steam trains over some eight miles of track, with ambitious plans to expand east and west.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-05.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A very, very wet walk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-06.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">Chirk and Pontcysyllte Aqueducts<\/div>\n<div>Old and new combine here, with the railway running above the famous 70 feet high aqueduct, built between 1796 and 1801 by Thomas Telford and William Jessop.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-07.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A morning walk along the canal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-08.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/llangollen-chirk-wales-09.jpg\" alt=\"A winter's walk around Llangollen and Chirk, north Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had hoped to make the massively impressive Pontcysyllte Aqueduct at Froncysyllte, but time was against us and we had to turn around to catch our train back to London.<\/p>\n<p>Taking 10 years to build the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was opened in 1805, with each stone pier rising to a height of 116ft.
