Toynbee, a famous historian and the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/philadelphia-toynbee-tiles-1.jpg\" alt=\"The mystery of the Philadelphia Toynbee Tiles and Planet Jupiter\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>[pic: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Toynbee-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">wikipedia<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Found embedded in asphalt in over twenty major cities in the United States and four South American capitals, several hundred tiles of these tiles have been discovered since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Most contain variations on the following inscription:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>TOYNBEE IDEA<br \/>\nIN Kubrick&#8217;s 2001<br \/>\nRESURRECT DEAD<br \/>\nON PLANET JUPITER.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These author of these tiles is unknown, although James Morasco (May 6, 1915 \u2013 March 15, 2003), a Philadelphia carpenter, has been cited as the possible culprit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/philadelphia-toynbee-tiles-2.jpg\" alt=\"The mystery of the Philadelphia Toynbee Tiles and Planet Jupiter\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia-based independent filmmakers Justin Duerr, Jon Foy, Colin Smith, and Steve Weinik have created a documentary about the tiles called &#8216;Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/blogs\/the-insider\/Philly_film_is_a_winner_at_Sundance.html\" target=\"_blank\">which has just\u00a0won<\/a> the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Documentary category.<\/p>\n<p>See the story behind the film here:<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"580\" height=\"351\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/DcZELQhpf_o?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toynbee_tiles\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia entry<\/a>] &#8211; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/philadelphia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia\u00a0photos<\/a>]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spotted this curious message on a\u00a0Philadelphia\u00a0sidewalk in 2008, and found that it was one of many located around the city.
