{"id":3682,"date":"2011-03-11T11:30:37","date_gmt":"2011-03-11T11:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=3682"},"modified":"2011-04-18T00:01:28","modified_gmt":"2011-04-17T23:01:28","slug":"pic-of-the-day-bradys-clock-tower-brixton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/pic-of-the-day-bradys-clock-tower-brixton\/","title":{"rendered":"Brady&#8217;s six-sided clock tower, Brixton and Annie Allen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bradys-clock-tower-brixton.jpg\" alt=\"Pic of the day: Brady's clock tower, Brixton\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s long been one of my most loved Brixton landmarks, and it&#8217;s a tragedy to see the distinctive six sided clock tower of the old Railway Hotel (Brady&#8217;s), 20 Atlantic Road, Brixton\u00a0continuing to decay after decades of neglect.<\/p>\n<p>The clock&#8217;s hands stopped moving years ago &#8211;\u00a0the internal workings had long seized up &#8211; and\u00a0year after year more crap graffiti is daubed over the fine ironwork.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bradys-clock-tower-brixton-2.jpg\" alt=\"Pic of the day: Brady's clock tower, Brixton\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bacchanalian bevvying <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Built in 1880, the Railway Hotel has always operated as a hotel\/pub, and by the 1990s had achieved a certain notoriety as a late night drinking destination with a distinctly Bacchanalian air about it.<\/p>\n<p>Compulsorily purchased and closed in 1999, the building was squatted the following year with the front bar being reopened and art\/poetry events put on for local artists (and drinkers).<\/p>\n<p>The old music room at the back was slowly cleared up too &#8211; a\u00a0truly\u00a0fearsome task by all accounts &#8211; and events were also put on there (I gave a talk there\u00a0about\u00a0web design and activism just before the place was finally evicted in 2002).<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the building has criminally been left empty, and \u00a0the plight of the Railway Hotel\u00a0remains\u00a0\u00a0a\u00a0thorn\u00a0in the side of many Brixtonians.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bradys-clock-tower-brixton-1.jpg\" alt=\"Pic of the day: Brady's clock tower, Brixton\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The tower is unusual in that it has six sides &#8211; designed so that passengers on the passing rail tracks could read the time &#8211; and the cast iron panels are both\u00a0intricate\u00a0and pleasing to the eye, with a delightful spire and weathervane capping off the construction.<\/p>\n<p>I managed to get up inside the clock tower when the\u00a0building\u00a0was squatted and was disappointed to see that the clock mechanism\u00a0seemed beyond repair.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s hear it for Annie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On both the clock tower and above the first floor corner\u00a0window\u00a0can be seen the date of construction proudly displayed, with the latter adding, &#8220;LAID BY ANNIE ALLEN.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t expect that Ms Allen would have expected that this fine building\u00a0would\u00a0later play reputedly host to Jimi Hendrix and The Clash, and later on Alabama 3, but I&#8217;m pretty sure she wouldn&#8217;t be too chuffed with the people\u00a0responsible\u00a0for letting it get into its current parlous state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Norwood girl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I managed to find out a little bit about Annie: she was born in Norwood in 1863 &#8211; so would have been just 17 when she laid the stone &#8211; and she was married to James Cobb Pidgeon in\u00a0Christchurch, Dorset in 1889.<\/p>\n<p>They were both living at the Railway Hotel in 1891, but by a decade later they had moved onto\u00a0Raleigh Lodge, Brixton Hill, Brixton with their three\u00a0children, Emily, Annie and George, along with three servants.<\/p>\n<p>Annie died in\u00a01921, aged 57 years in Epsom [<a href=\"http:\/\/homepage.ntlworld.com\/i.c.pidgeon\/Genealogy\/PIDGEON\/Tree_Gt%20Yarmouth%20(3).htm\" target=\"_blank\">see family genealogy<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bradys-clock-tower-brixton-3.jpg\" alt=\"Pic of the day: Brady's clock tower, Brixton\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s hope this\u00a0beautiful\u00a0Gothic\u00a0Brixton landmark gets put into use again soon, before it&#8217;s too late.<\/p>\n<p>There is some hope on the horizon though, with local campaign group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abcbrixton.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=54&amp;Itemid=96\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Brixton<\/a> pushing ahead with plans to restore and regenerate the building.
