{"id":4168,"date":"2011-04-27T09:45:56","date_gmt":"2011-04-27T08:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=4168"},"modified":"2011-04-27T02:04:29","modified_gmt":"2011-04-27T01:04:29","slug":"regent-street-bedecked-with-union-jacks-as-the-royal-wedding-looms-closer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/regent-street-bedecked-with-union-jacks-as-the-royal-wedding-looms-closer\/","title":{"rendered":"Regent Street bedecked with Union Jacks as ghastly Royal Wedding looms closer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regent-street-royal-wedding-2011-01.jpg\" alt=\"Union Jack bedecked with Union Jacks as the Royal Wedding looms closer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let me get one thing out of the way before I start: being Welsh, the Union flag means precious little to me (there&#8217;s not even a hint of the Red Dragon in its composition), but\u00a0there is\u00a0something\u00a0strangely uplifting about the rows of flags along Regent Street in central London.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regent-street-royal-wedding-2011-02.jpg\" alt=\"Union Jack bedecked with Union Jacks as the Royal Wedding looms closer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think I&#8217;ve worked out why I like them too: the red, white and blue above the streets seem evocative of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victory_in_Europe_Day\" target=\"_blank\">VE Day<\/a> (that&#8217;s when Nazi Germany surrendered in WW2) and that day &#8211; by just\u00a0about\u00a0any account &#8211; can surely only be seen as a Good Day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regent-street-royal-wedding-2011-04.jpg\" alt=\"Union Jack bedecked with Union Jacks as the Royal Wedding looms closer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, I really\u00a0couldn&#8217;t\u00a0give even a <em>quarter<\/em> of a hoot about the forthcoming\u00a0marriage &#8211; in fact, we&#8217;re putting on two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.offlineclub.com\" target=\"_blank\">fun packed anti-royal parties<\/a> in downtown Brixton so we can avoid the entire thing by being drunk for most of the time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regent-street-royal-wedding-2011-03.jpg\" alt=\"Union Jack bedecked with Union Jacks as the Royal Wedding looms closer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not to say that we&#8217;re not\u00a0getting\u00a0into the spirit of things in our own way &#8211; on\u00a0Sunday, the urban75\u00a0Craft\u00a0Club convened to create some wonderful Anarchist Bunting &#8211; check out the evidence:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/anarchist-bunting-takes-shape-at-the-brixton-frontline-of-buntline\/\">Anarchist bunting takes shape at the Brixton Frontline of Buntline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regent-street-royal-wedding-2011-05.jpg\" alt=\"Union Jack bedecked with Union Jacks as the Royal Wedding looms closer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a view looking down Regent Street towards Piccadilly Circus.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regent-street-royal-wedding-2011-06.jpg\" alt=\"Union Jack bedecked with Union Jacks as the Royal Wedding looms closer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A last look of the flag festival.
