{"id":4258,"date":"2011-05-09T10:00:31","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T09:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=4258"},"modified":"2011-05-09T01:24:15","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T00:24:15","slug":"three-trafalgar-square-scenes-london-may-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/three-trafalgar-square-scenes-london-may-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"The plinth, the artist and contortionist, Trafalgar Square, May 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/trafalgar-square-scenes-01.jpg\" alt=\"The plinth, the artist and contortionist, Trafalgar Square, May 2011\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t get enough of street performers and bizarrely garbed people standing still for long periods of time, then the good news is that you no longer have to walk to\u00a0Covent Garden and South Bank &#8211; it&#8217;s all\u00a0heading\u00a0to Trafalgar Square!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/trafalgar-square-scenes-04.jpg\" alt=\"Three Trafalgar Square scenes, May 2011\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It seems that\u00a0Trafalgar Square is not to be spared of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/covent-garden-photos-market-and-curious-street-artists\/\">painted people standing on boxes, clowns, \u00a0cartoonists, street performers<\/a> and all the other tourist-troubling tosh seen around town.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/trafalgar-square-scenes-03.jpg\" alt=\"Three Trafalgar Square scenes, May 2011\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never felt the urge to have a stranger draw a &#8216;witty&#8217; caricature of me when I&#8217;m on\u00a0holiday, but I guess there must be a demand for it, even if\u00a0business\u00a0looked a little\u00a0light\u00a0for the lady above.<\/p>\n<p>Just to the left of her was some bloke painted in gold doing something that looked vaguely robotic, while another &#8216;human statue&#8217; was doing, or rather not doing, their thing close by.<\/p>\n<p>Their appeal continues to\u00a0mystify\u00a0me, but good luck to &#8217;em.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/trafalgar-square-scenes-02.jpg\" alt=\"Three Trafalgar Square scenes, May 2011\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Far more interesting to me is the\u00a0fabulous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/nelson%E2%80%99s-ship-in-a-bottle-and-gay-pride-trafalgar-square\/\">&#8220;Nelson\u2019s Ship in a Bottle\u201d sculpture<\/a> which stands on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/trafalgar-square-scenes-05.jpg\" alt=\"The plinth, the artist and contortionist, Trafalgar Square, May 2011\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This delightful piece,\u00a0unveiled on Monday 24 May 2010,\u00a0was created by leading Anglo-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare.
