{"id":4350,"date":"2011-05-24T10:30:08","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T09:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=4350"},"modified":"2011-05-24T10:38:08","modified_gmt":"2011-05-24T09:38:08","slug":"the-politician-illusionist-and-wonderful-talking-machine-at-322-brixton-road-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/the-politician-illusionist-and-wonderful-talking-machine-at-322-brixton-road-london\/","title":{"rendered":"The politician, the illusionist and the &#8216;wonderful talking machine,&#8217; 322 Brixton Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/332-brixton-road-london-01.jpg\" alt=\"The faded architectural glamour of 322 Brixton Road, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still looks a little bit wonky after its recent\u00a0refurbishment, but this building currently up for sale at 322 Brixton Road, London SW9 once enjoyed a rather more\u00a0glamorous\u00a0past.<\/p>\n<p>It was once \u00a0home to the Brixton Liberal\u00a0Association, where Edwardian visitors could enjoy\u00a0open air fetes, political meetings,\u00a0Royal illusionists\u00a0and a performance from the intriguing\u00a0sounding &#8220;South London Ethiopian Minstrel\u00a0Troupe.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/332-brixton-road-london-10.jpg\" alt=\"The faded architectural glamour of 322 Brixton Road, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0property\u00a0had been used by\u00a0the &#8216;Asian Community Action Group&#8217; from July 1992 to July 2000, and after the end of their tenure, the already-shabby building was left to rot away, as witnessed\u00a0by this January 2002 view.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/332-brixton-road-london-11.jpg\" alt=\"The faded architectural glamour of 322 Brixton Road, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Original Edwardian doorway detail.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/332-brixton-road-london-05.jpg\" alt=\"The faded architectural glamour of 322 Brixton Road, London\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Things had deteriorated considerably by the following year, with the doorway detail stripped away. Morris &amp; Co were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.estatesgazette.com\/propertylink\/advert\/brixton_road_london_lambeth-london_lambeth-3302109.htm\" target=\"_blank\">working out of the building<\/a> in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, it was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.housepricecrash.co.uk\/forum\/index.php?showtopic=77291\" target=\"_blank\">put up for sale<\/a> for \u00a3800k but there were no takers, and it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.estatesgazette.com\/propertylink\/advert\/brixton_road_london_lambeth-london_lambeth-3302109.htm\" target=\"_blank\">currently being offered<\/a> for \u00a330k rent per annum.<\/p>\n<p>Have you any old photos of the building?
