{"id":43644,"date":"2025-06-25T13:00:39","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T12:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=43644"},"modified":"2025-06-25T13:00:39","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T12:00:39","slug":"in-photos-a-summer-ride-on-the-cholsey-and-wallingford-preserved-railway-oxfordshire-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/in-photos-a-summer-ride-on-the-cholsey-and-wallingford-preserved-railway-oxfordshire-england\/","title":{"rendered":"In photos: a summer ride on the Cholsey and Wallingford preserved railway, Oxfordshire, England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/pics\/cholsey-railway-01.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a trip on the Cholsey and Wallingford preserved railway, Oxfordshire, England\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Cholsey and Wallingford Railway is a two and a half mile (4 km) long standard gauge heritage railway running along\u00a0 a large chunk of the former Wallingford branch of the Great Western Railway.<\/p>\n<p>Trains depart from a bay platform at Cholsey station, which enjoys direct connections from Paddington, Reading and Didcot.<\/p>\n<p>Passenger duties being are usually taken care of by a\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/fifty-year-old-train-still-in-service-as-br-class-121-rumbles-along-the-cardiff-bay-line\/\">1960s &#8216;bubble car&#8217;,<\/a> a Class 08 diesel or the occasional visiting steam loco.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/pics\/cholsey-railway-02.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a trip on the Cholsey and Wallingford preserved railway, Oxfordshire, England\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The original Wallingford railway station and the final segment of the line disappeared under a housing estate many years ago, prompting the preservationists to build this fine new station on Hithercroft Road.<\/p>\n<p>Dominating the scene is the newly installed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cholsey-wallingford-railway.com\/maidenhead-canopy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Maidenhead Canopy,<\/a> which dates from the early days of Brunel&#8217;s Great Western Railway.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/pics\/cholsey-railway-03.jpg\" alt=\"In photos: a trip on the Cholsey and Wallingford preserved railway, Oxfordshire, England\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The railway became popularly known as the Wallingford Bunk.<\/p>\n<p>The Curator of the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway Museum attributes the following story to the late Mrs Harold Gale.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Around the turn of the century, the loco did a &#8216;bunk&#8217;. It left Cholsey station without its coaches. Harold and Len Gale, returning from football in Reading, had uncoupled the loco while it waited in the bay platform.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[<em><a
