{"id":4408,"date":"2011-05-31T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2011-05-31T09:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=4408"},"modified":"2011-05-31T12:22:33","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T11:22:33","slug":"barry-island-breakwater-pier-and-railway-south-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/barry-island-breakwater-pier-and-railway-south-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"Barry Island breakwater, pier and railway, south Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/barry-island-breakwater-railway-01.jpg\" alt=\"Barry Island breakwater, pier and railway, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Located at the entrance to Barry Docks to the east of Barry Island can be found this old breakwater, complete with a rusting railway track leading to the\u00a0lighthouse\u00a0at the end.<\/p>\n<p>Built by David Davies from 1889 onwards, \u00a0Barry Docks handled vast amounts of coal from the south Wales valleys, peaking in 1913, when over 11 million tonnes of coal and coke passed through the port.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/barry-island-breakwater-railway-02.jpg\" alt=\"Barry Island breakwater, pier and railway, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The coal export trade has now long gone,\u00a0leaving\u00a0the area littered with industrial\u00a0archaeology and abandoned workings like this derelict breakwater.<\/p>\n<p>Curious items\u00a0linger\u00a0on too, \u00a0like this\u00a0strange\u00a0building mounted on rail wheels, which can &#8211; in theory at least &#8211;\u00a0traverse the rusty railway track.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/barry-island-breakwater-railway-03.jpg\" alt=\"Barry Island breakwater, pier and railway, Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The blue door and balcony of the wheeled shed. Wales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this close up of the track, you can see the cast\u00a0chair\u00a0marked with GWR (Great Western Railway) which dates it to pre-1948.<\/p>\n<p>The track is bullhead rail laid on Jackson&#8217;s Bay &#8211; this sign warns of falling rocks.
