East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/east-brixton-battersea-1969-01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Purchased for the princely sum of \u00a31.25 on eBay, this old British rail ticket is for a journey which can no longer be made, as East Brixton station has long since disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Opening as Loughborough Park in 1866, renamed Loughborough Park &amp; Brixton from 1870, before finally sticking with East Brixton from 1894, the\u00a0station was on the South London Line from London Victoria to London Bridge.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/east-brixton-battersea-1969-02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/east-brixton-battersea-1969-07.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>East Brixton consisted of two platforms with wooden buildings built on a viaduct close to Barrington Road, near Coldharbour Lane (the Medusa nightclub now occupies the street level buildings, while no trace remains of the track level structures) .<\/p>\n<p>Although the line served a useful route, passenger numbers were hit when when the nearby Brixton tube station opened up in 1971.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/east-brixton-battersea-1969-08.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The station grew steadily shabbier, and with the wooden platforms and buildings needing extensive repairs, it was decided to close East Brixton.\u00a0Final closure\u00a0occurred\u00a0on 5 January 1976.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/east-brixton-battersea-1969-03.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cardboard ticket is known as an &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmondson_railway_ticket\" target=\"_blank\">Edmondson railway ticket<\/a>,&#8217; named after\u00a0its inventor, Thomas Edmondson.<\/p>\n<p>Widely\u00a0adopted from 1842 onwards, the tickets remained in use in the UK until as late as February 1990.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/east-brixton-battersea-1969-06.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve no idea who made the journey on Friday, the 3rd October 1969 (or why they kept the ticket for so long), but I can tell you it cost them 1\/- (5p).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"East Brixton station to Battersea, 3rd October 1969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/east-brixton-battersea-1969-04.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not a lot seems to be happening around the world on this date.<\/p>\n<p>Sudan drew three-all with Nigeria in a\u00a0World Cup Africa Qualifying Final Round Ground match, while Mr and Mrs Stefani were celebrating the birth of their daughter\u00a0Gwen, who went on to bother the charts with her &#8216;No Doubt&#8217; band.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Monty Python were busy recording <a href=\"http:\/\/orangecow.org\/pythonet\/sketches\/one.htm \" target=\"_blank\">episode five<\/a> of their first series, with the day&#8217;s filming including\u00a0sketches\u00a0such as &#8216;Confuse-a-Cat,&#8217;
