{"id":4698,"date":"2011-07-13T11:30:03","date_gmt":"2011-07-13T10:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=4698"},"modified":"2011-07-13T11:26:15","modified_gmt":"2011-07-13T10:26:15","slug":"a-look-inside-the-electric-brixton-formerly-the-brixton-fridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-look-inside-the-electric-brixton-formerly-the-brixton-fridge\/","title":{"rendered":"A look inside the Electric Brixton, formerly the Brixton Fridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/electric-brixton-fridge-02.jpg\" alt=\"A look inside the Electric Brixton, formerly the Brixton Fridge\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A much loved south London venue is set to\u00a0reopen\u00a0this autumn, with the old Brixton Fridge being relaunched as the\u00a0Electric Brixton.<\/p>\n<p>With work\u00a0underway\u00a0to restore the fine Edwardian interior &#8211; and add some modern touches &#8211; the Electric will offer a capacity of 1,700 people for club events and 1,500 for live shows.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday 22nd September, there&#8217;ll be an invite-only industry launch followed by a series of public launch events.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/electric-brixton-fridge-01.jpg\" alt=\"A look inside the Electric Brixton, formerly the Brixton Fridge\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Designed in the Edwardian neo-classical and Baroque style by\u00a0Gilbert Booth, the building opened as the Palladium Picture Playhouse on 20th March 1913.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving as a cinema for nearly 70 years before closure in March 1981, the building went through several names, changing from the Palladium, to the Regal in 1956 (-1963), the ABC 1963-1977, the ACE 1977-1984 and the Fridge 1985-2011.<\/p>\n<p>A rather brutal remodelling in 1955 saw the classical frontage being replaced with the austere post-war modernist\u00a0fa\u00e7ade\u00a0that\u00a0remains\u00a0today (but the skanky old fridges that were stuck on the\u00a0front\u00a0have now been removed).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/electric-brixton-fridge-03.jpg\" alt=\"A look inside the Electric Brixton, formerly the Brixton Fridge\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Refurbishment work underway inside, with the old <em>none-more-black<\/em>\u00a0of the Fridge being replaced by a jauntier gold and blue colour scheme.
