{"id":4860,"date":"2011-08-10T14:15:41","date_gmt":"2011-08-10T13:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=4860"},"modified":"2011-08-10T01:10:54","modified_gmt":"2011-08-10T00:10:54","slug":"cardiff-overrun-with-seagulls-not-even-aneurin-bevan-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/cardiff-overrun-with-seagulls-not-even-aneurin-bevan-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff overrun with seagulls, not even Aneurin Bevan safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardiff-seagulls-01.jpg\" alt=\"Cardiff overrun with seagulls, not even Aneurin Bevan safe\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seagull numbers in Cardiff have apparently more than doubled in the past five years, with the cheeky ice-cream stealing buggers creating all sorts of problems &#8211; and even covering Welsh hero <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/historic_figures\/bevan_aneurin.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Aneurin Bevan<\/a> in their sticky bottom stuff.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardiff-seagulls-03.jpg\" alt=\"Cardiff overrun with seagulls, not even Aneurin Bevan safe\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With their early morning incessant squawkings mightily miffing residents, and their rear end debris distributing unwelcome white sploshes all over the Principality, the council has been researching what&#8217;s causing the explosive growth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardiff-seagulls-02.jpg\" alt=\"Cardiff overrun with seagulls, not even Aneurin Bevan safe\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Talking to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-14425779\" target=\"_blank\">the BBC<\/a>, James Byrne of RSPB Cymru commented that all the food and nesting places around the city were creating an environment as an enticing to a seagull as beer and curry and chips are to a Bluebird.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s also a push factor in that in the rest of the UK seagulls are declining massively,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/cardiff-seagulls-04.jpg\" alt=\"Cardiff overrun with seagulls, not even Aneurin Bevan safe\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/yourcardiff.walesonline.co.uk\/2011\/08\/05\/cardiffs-seagull-population-largest-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wales Online<\/a> served up a feast of seagull facts, informing its readers that\u00a0Cardiff\u2019s seagull population was possibly the \u00a0\u2018largest in the world.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>They went on to say that the\u00a0highest figures of nesting gulls were to be found in Butetown, with 490 pairs, Cardiff Docks, 523 pairs, Gabalfa, 113 pairs, Newport Road East, 395 pairs, with lucky ol&#8217; Leckwith having the highest concentration, registering 616 pairs of nesting birds.<\/p>\n<p>In total, Cardiff can boast\u00a03,339 pairs (how do they count these things?) with the growth likely to nudge it ahead of the UK&#8217;s previously highest gull population in Aberdeen.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it. Cardiff is #1 in the UK.
