It’s not a patch on the sophisticated ‘Boris Bikes’ scheme<\/a> that covers a large chunk of central London, but it’s great to see Cardiff’s more modest OyBike bike rental system prospering.<\/p>\n

Introduced back in November 2009, the scheme is a street-based rental station technology that lets users hire and return bicycles around the centre of\u00a0Cardiff\u00a0 via their mobile phones.<\/p>\n

City-wide<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the moment, there’s 18 rental locations, covering as far north as Llandaff\u00a0railway\u00a0station and down to Cardiff\u00a0International\u00a0White water in the south. \u00a0Users can check the availability of bikes and spaces via a web map interface.<\/p>\n

To use the system, you have to\u00a0register on-line at http:\/\/www.oybike.com<\/a>\u00a0and pay a subscription fee of \u00a35 for a day (with no hire fees), \u00a35 for a week or \u00a318 for the whole year.<\/p>\n

Hire rates currently work out as:<\/p>\n

Up to 30 mins = FREE
\n30-60 mins = \u00a30.50
\n60-120 mins = \u00a31.00
\n120-180 mins = \u00a32.50
\n180-240 mins = \u00a33.50
\n240 mins and above = \u00a35.00<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

24 hours<\/strong><\/p>\n

All bikes have to be returned 24 hours of being hired – after that the system will assume that they’ve been nicked with the last user charged for the value of the bike – ouch!<\/p>\n

I didn’t get chance to take one of these creatures for a spin but they seem to have\u00a0followed\u00a0the same ‘make ’em ugly so they won’t get nicked’ unisex design philosophy of the Barclays\/TfL London bikes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The three -speed bikes\u00a0employ\u00a0an unusual – but less messy –\u00a0shaft\u00a0drive mechanism and come with built-in locks and front baskets and rear carriers.<\/p>\n

They look like fun, so I hope to get a ride on one the next time I’m up in Cardiff. Anyone used them yet?<\/p>\n
