central\u00a0Brixton.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-ice-rink-october-2011-02.jpg\" alt=\"Construction work speeds ahead at Brixton Ice Rink\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Situated next to the Brixton Recreation Centre, the\u00a056m x 26m rink is set to\u00a0open\u00a0in January 2012, and for two and a half years will serve as the temporary\u00a0home of Streatham\u2019s ice skating and ice hockey teams while Tesco\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/streatham-struggles-to-keep-its-leisure-and-entertainment-venues\/\" target=\"_blank\">controversial Hub\u00a0project\u00a0is being built<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-ice-rink-october-2011-03.jpg\" alt=\"Brixton Ice Rink going up at a rate of knots\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/brixton-market-lockdown-traders-protest-against-proposed-car-park-closure\/\" target=\"_blank\">long-running campaign of opposition from local traders<\/a>\u00a0to the ice rink, which was built on the site of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/brixton-station-road-car-park-to-become-ice-rink\/\">particularly\u00a0ugly but rather useful multi-story car park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-ice-rink-october-2011-04.jpg\" alt=\"Brixton Ice Rink going up at a \/><\/p>\n<p>Really old school Brixtonites will recall that the town once had its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/brixton-roller-skating-rink-memories-from-the-late-1950s\/\">Roller
