The Right Rum For Today&#8217;s Taste&#8221; adorned the roof of Cardiff City&#8217;s Ninian Park football ground for more than 40 years.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The words were painted over the Popular Bank, a large stand with a\u00a0mixture of covered seating and uncovered standing terrace to the front.<\/p>\n<p>The stand was known locally as the &#8216;Bob Bank,&#8217; \u00a0so named because it used to cost one old shilling \u00a0(a bob; 5p in today&#8217;s money) to stand there between the two World Wars.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/captain-morgan-rum-cardiff-02.jpg\" alt=\"Remembering the Captain Morgan Rum advert, Ninian Park, Cardiff\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 1958 a large roof was\u00a0constructed\u00a0\u00a0over the\u00a0previously\u00a0uncovered terracing, with the roof painted plain white.<\/p>\n<p>In 1960, a Canadian distillery company,\u00a0House of Segram, took out a three-year lease on the roof space for an annual rent of \u00a3300, and painted on the name of\u00a0one of their popular products, Captain Morgan Rum.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/captain-morgan-rum-cardiff-03.jpg\" alt=\"Remembering the Captain Morgan Rum advert, Ninian Park, Cardiff\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the three-year lease was up, the\u00a0advert remained on the roof, presumably because no new advertisers could be found.<\/p>\n<p>And so Captain Morgan Rum\u00a0became forever associated with the ground, with the advert remaining\u00a0on the roof from 1960 to 2001 &#8211; a total of 41 years.<\/p>\n<p>The paint lasted impressively well too, with the advert still clearly visible right to the end.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/cardiff\/images\/goodbye-ninian-park-10.jpg\" alt=\"Goodbye Ninian Park, home of Cardiff City football club, Cardiff, Wales - photos of half demolished stadium, 26th December 2009\" width=\"580\" height=\"379\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rum advert was\u00a0finally\u00a0painted over in 2001, first by an advert for &#8220;Hyper-Value&#8221;
