Brixton’s Christmas lights are getting switched on this year from 4pm in Windrush Square<\/a>, central Brixton.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There’ll also be a\u00a0Brixton library Christmas card workshop, 4pm, followed by a\u00a0young people’s light\u00a0 parade at 5pm and the launch of a new ‘twilight’ street market, the Brixton Sundowner<\/a>, from 5pm to 8pm.<\/p>\n

The market will run every Friday in December from 5 – 10pm on Windrush Square, Brixton.<\/p>\n

The St Martins Elite choir<\/a> will also be in\u00a0attendance\u00a0for the Christmas Lights ceremony,\u00a0singing three songs for everyone.<\/p>\n

An Edwardian Brixton Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Edwardian times, festive Brixtonites really went for the festive season in a mighty big way, as you can see in this 1908 view of Electric Avenue.<\/p>\n

The street – once an upmarket shopping destination<\/a> – is\u00a0bedecked in a\u00a0forest of\u00a0Christmas trees with loads of dangly bits hanging from its now\u00a0vanished canopies<\/a>.<\/p>\n
