{"id":5719,"date":"2012-01-06T09:45:04","date_gmt":"2012-01-06T09:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=5719"},"modified":"2012-01-06T10:59:45","modified_gmt":"2012-01-06T10:59:45","slug":"what-have-they-done-to-the-bt-tower-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/what-have-they-done-to-the-bt-tower-in-london\/","title":{"rendered":"What have they done to the BT Tower in London?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bt-tower-london-changes-jan-2012-05.jpg\" alt=\"What have they done to the BT Tower in London?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite its Grade II listed status, BT have been allowed to make major changes to the appearance of the iconic BT Tower in central London.<\/p>\n<p>Citing safety reasons, BT has now stripped out all the iconic dishes and horns that were situated along \u00a0the upper part of the tower.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bt-tower-london-changes-jan-2012-04.jpg\" alt=\"What have they done to the BT Tower in London?\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rusting dishes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In August last year Camden Council approved plans for the\u00a0large dish-shaped aerials to be removed, after BT said that some of the now unused equipment had become detached from the tower.<\/p>\n<p>With rusting bolts and wobbly\u00a0brackets, the\u00a0loose equipment was described as &#8220;a major health risk&#8221; due to the tower&#8217;s height and location in the centre of London.<\/p>\n<p>The first two dishes were removed in November 2010, with the rest swiftly following,\u00a0leaving\u00a0the tower looking strangely &#8216;naked&#8217; now.<\/p>\n<p>With the central concrete core exposed, and a selection of narrow platforms left in situ, it has to be said that the tower does now have something of a rather\u00a0pleasingly sci-fi look to it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bt-tower-london-changes-jan-2012-09.jpg\" alt=\"What have they done to the BT Tower in London?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>View from the old revolving restaurant on the 34th floor of the BT Tower, August 2007.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bt-tower-london-changes-jan-2012-07.jpg\" alt=\"What have they done to the BT Tower in London?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The BT Tower in October 2010 showing a full array of dishes and the distinctive horns.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bt-tower-london-changes-jan-2012-01.jpg\" alt=\"What have they done to the BT Tower in London?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>How it looks today with the receiving equipment removed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bt-tower-london-changes-jan-2012-08.jpg\" alt=\"What have they done to the BT Tower in London?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Admiring the view from the top of the BT Tower, March 2004.
