{"id":5735,"date":"2012-01-10T15:00:42","date_gmt":"2012-01-10T15:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=5735"},"modified":"2012-01-09T00:09:13","modified_gmt":"2012-01-09T00:09:13","slug":"a-twilight-walk-through-times-square-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-twilight-walk-through-times-square-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"A twilight walk through Times Square, New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/times-square-new-york-01.jpg\" alt=\"A twilight walk through Times Square, Manhattan, New York, NYC\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once one of the seedier parts of Manhattan, Times Square was cleaned up in the mid-1990s, with Mayor Rudolph Giuliani overseeing the closing of the porno theatres and pressurising the drug dealers and &#8216;squeegee men&#8217; to relocate elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s been Disneyfied and sanitised into a tourist-friendly cash-till, Times Square is still a\u00a0fascinating and exciting place to walk through. \u00a0Here&#8217;s some photos from a December 2010 twilight ramble through the area.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/times-square-new-york-02.jpg\" alt=\"A twilight walk through Times Square, Manhattan, New York, NYC\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Times Square is situated in Midtown Manhattan\u00a0at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretches from West 42nd to West 47th Streets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/times-square-new-york-03.jpg\" alt=\"A twilight walk through Times Square, Manhattan, New York, NYC\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/times-square-new-york-04.jpg\" alt=\"A twilight walk through Times Square, Manhattan, New York, NYC\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Victorian times, the area was known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Longacre_Square\" target=\"_blank\">Longacre Square<\/a>, named after the central London street. It was renamed as Times Square in 1904.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/times-square-new-york-05.jpg\" alt=\"A twilight walk through Times Square, Manhattan, New York, NYC\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Times Square was declared a smoke free zone in February 2011, as New York extended the outdoors smoking ban to the area.<\/p>\n<p>Try and light up here and you can expect to be slapped down with a 50 buck fine.
